It's Hard To Believe That It's Been 2 Years......
« on: January 09, 2025, 02:01:29 PM »
...Since our beloved friend and mentor G. Fred Asbell left us. I am embarassed to admit that I hadn't thought about it until a few minutes ago while talking with Teresa Asbell.

2 years.....WOW. We really miss you Fred, many things are not the same without you.

A great writer and mentor. Wish I had met him.

My first custom bow was a one piece Bighorn that I ordered back in the late 80’s. This sport has lost a lot of greats in the last few years that the likes of which will never be replaced.
If it isn't life or death, it's no big deal.

I had the privilege to talk with G Fred a few different times at Kalamazoo.
Bought a GFA quiver directly from him in person and got a book that he signed.
The quiver is the best one I have ever used.
Thanks for posting this.

I sat with Fred many hours in the booths at Kalamazoo and Compton. One thing about Fred....when folks stopped by to talk, he truly wanted to hear what you had to say. He loved seeing other folks trophy pictures, hearing how they sharpened broadheads, tuned a bow....everything. WE may have looked at him as an "expert" (He is getting mad right now because I typed that)but he just saw himself as another bowhunter, and he was always learning, gathering information.

He was very humble. His success was organic, not forced.

G. Fred was my main motivator for getting back into trad in the early eighties. I shot a lot of animals with the 66" 65# Bighorn T/D he made for me. I still go back and reference his Instinctive Shooting books.

Roger, I was waiting for a good friend to post, but he rarely does anymore.  I’ll do it for him and keep him anonymous.
Anyway, he and I were talking about Fred a few years ago. He mentioned that many years ago he was in the same bear camp as Fred.

He said he, Fred and one or two other guys went outside of camp just to take a few practice shots. The one thing he mentioned about the trip was that experience. He said Fred was just one of the guys enjoying the experience- Fred didn’t comment on anybody’s shooting, (good or bad).  Just sort of hanging out and flinging a few arrows.

Kinda supports your comment about him.
