Woods for accent stripes
« on: February 06, 2025, 10:26:17 PM »
Can you guys tell me what woods you like to use in risers for accent stripes?  I’ve been told you dont want to use a phenolic or glass because you can feel it as the wood changes. I am mostly interested in black for the dark accent stripes. Thanks

I use Wenge for any black accent lines. Even if its not perfectly black at first, it will be after applying oil and/or finish. Black Walnut also works, just choose the darkest pieces to use. Paduak for red, sugar maple for white.

I highly recommend bloodwood for deep red accents, and it makes a great riser too. Very dense. Can be used as an I beam with softer more fragile or brittle woods too. Used in a footing adds strength to the riser too. Excellent wedge stock too.

Wenge is acceptable, and has very similar properties as paduke. Very stiff brittle wood. It adds a bit of zip to a bow limb using it in the core lams  too.

I’ve never used spectra in a black color, but have use Chromaply. It has a higher density with thinner lams than spectra. More expensive too.

Ebony is too expensive to entertain cutting up for accent strips, but will work nicely  if you have scraps you can slice up.

But you are right to avoid phenolic or glass accent lines in a wood riser. IMO.

I agree with the bloodworm. But I have seen it so oily  it's hard to sand.

I have never cared for Paduke seems soft and loses it's color fading to brown.  Much prefer bloodwood for a red accent.

That’s not red…. That’s hot pink. :biglaugh:

Sometimes I wonder if you are color blind Stic… I don’t think I’ve ever seen a bowyer produce such wild color combos as you do.

Then again…. Some people do buy lime green cars… :dunno: :dunno:

I too like bloodwood, wenge and maple. Have also used holly which is almost white.
