Split VS 3 Under Issue, Help/Advice Appreciated
« on: March 19, 2025, 10:31:48 AM »
I used to shoot split finger recurve when I was younger (about 23 years ago) and it seemed fairly easy I recently decided to pick it back up and really dig back into it initially for target practice with the goal of hunting.
I'm now good with 3 under and can hunt 3 under confidently but am having serious problems getting consistency with split finger for the longer shots (25yd-30yd max w/current bow) and wont hunt split finger due to that.

My current equipment is a 1966 Black Hawk Warrior (LH) 47# @28" (my LOD is 27.9") bow length 66". I also shoot off the shelf and would prefer to continue to.

I have put 29", 400 spine, 4" turkey feather, right helical fletched carbon arrows (125 grain FP**) through it and 30", 500 spine, 4" turkey feather straight fletched carbon arrows (125** grain FP) through it as well. Thought my arrow spine might have been some of the issue but don't see much of a difference/improvement.

Sorry if there is too much information, figured it might eliminate some common issues/fix suggestions.

Any tips/tricks/adjustment ideas/help would be greatly appreciated. for those that read this far I appreciate your time.

** Edited FP weight from 100gr to 125gr. was thinking about wrong bow when trying to remember the arrow set up. **

I might have more suggestions later, but first would you mind answering a couple of questions?

You seem to be doing fine shooting 3 under.  Why do you want to switch back to split finger?

You seem to want to hunt, and yet you're putting 100 grain field points on your arrows?  Most people who hunt these days put twice or more weight up front, i.e. 200 grains combined weight of points/broadheads plus inserts, in order to insure good penetration.

Even if you want different arrows for hunting and target practice, you still want 15% or more FOC to get good arrow flight, and to get that with your setup, you should probably be using 125-145 grain field points.  This may be one reason you're having consistency problems on longer shots.  Of course, it could be a form issue or a combination of things.

Hey McDave, I appreciate you taking the time to reply.

I would like to be able to shoot both 3 under and split. From my understanding split is a bit more accurate at farther distances where the arrow/arrowhead/bow could be obscuring the target when having to compensate for a bit of drop.

100% not going to hunt with field points, those are just for the target bag.
The field points are 125gr** that was a typo on my end (I have 100gr on a smaller lighter bow that I use for offhand "just for fun" shooting), sorry I'm an idiot and confused the two set ups when i was typing. Will fix and edit original post.
I have a set of 125gr 2 blade broadheads I plan to use for hunting.

I did put a lighted knock on a couple of the arrows to see if it would have any adverse effect, they are approx 22gr.

I'm not sure if i need to adjust my brace height. The bow makers stated brace height is "approx 8" from face of arrow rest" I always used to do approx 8" from the deepest part of the grip. Have never seen "face of arrow rest" stated before so measured from the most forward part of the arrow rest. So i might have that a little jacked up too.
