RD bow lenght
« on: March 26, 2025, 08:38:51 AM »
When you measure the lenght of a glass RD bow in order to call it a ntn lenght bow 62 64 or whatever do you measure it along the bow’s curve or in a straight line ntn. Or do you use the AMO lenght?

I mark my bows Always by AMO lenght: stringlenght for right bracehight + 3".

Only that way, the Customer will be able to purchase a new String without the need of measuring the old one for the right lenght.

AMO bow length is measured from the tip notch following the curve of the limb on the belly side, then straight through the riser, and up the curve of the bottom limb to tip notch before the bow is strung.

There is no given AMO string length as far as I know. Depending on your limb design, and desired brace height , your string length can vary from 2”- 3” less. Most of my bows run 2.25” less and run 7” -7.25” brace heights.

If you have recurve limbs with a  4” shorter string using AMO bow length, you would be wise to to check your pre load and possibly tinker with limb pad angle and a longer string. I’d bet you are leaving perfectly good performance on the table.

I’d be curious to see pictures of that bow on a tiller tree at brace and full draw, and the  DFC chart on one of those.

Do you have an adjustable riser you can change the limb pad angles ?  Those are the ticket for fine tuning limbs and string length. It’s amazing how much difference in draw length capacity and performance you can obtain just by fine tuning your limb pad angle and string length….

.02 cents worth….   Kirk

The bowlenght is defined by the propper String lenght.
Period.
If a 66" marked Bow needs a 62" or 64" String, ITS marked by actual lenght or whatever.
Everyone can mark a bow like he or she wants...

But this AMO Standards (downloaded from this Site) say what i wrote.

That's interesting.... I stand corrected. I didn't realize AMO was a "string length" standard, not Bow length. I guess i've been screwing up my marking AMO length all these years. I have always made my Bows length at 58". 60", 62" etc...etc and adjusted the string length to optimize performance on different limb designs.

Ooooops!    i guess i better quit marking AMO length on my limbs.    :dunno: :dunno: :dunno:

It's a good Idea for Standard Serial bows.
You Look at the AMO lenght and know, what stringlenght you need to buy.

But what, If your Bow works best with a 61,5" String?

For "Custom" i think telling the customer the correct String lenght he needs and write in the Bow, whatever you want May be the way to Go.

I have Cut my Models to very few and Made them matching the AMO Standard.

I suppose it wouldn’t take a lot of effort to shift things where I could use AMO string length.but…. I just never worried about it. I give the customer the string length and recommended brace height, then they do what they want anyway…lol

Hey Stic…. No horses here, either high or low, and I sold the cows and bought a boat a few years ago. So there are no bovine step ladders either.
