Hardwood Shafts

Just wondering what kind of hardwood shafts everyone was useing.Is one kind better than another?Who is a good supplier to purchase off of?I have a osage selfbow that's a good shooter.But it still has a good bit of handshock.I'm trying to tame it down a little.That's when I realized the arrows I'm using are only about 8 to 8 1/2 gpp of bow weight.I would like to get some heavier shafts to make at least a 600 gr. arrow.Any help would be appreciated.Thanks tradrick

I use to use Maple the most and I feel that it is as tough as Hickory but it is hard to come buy these days.  I have also used Hickory, Yellow Birch, Ash, and Laminated Birch.  I have made a lot of Laminated Birch arrows since it has the most consistent supply and they are very good shafts.  Joseph

Ash to me is far and away the best hardwood shaft.... I ain't broke one yet. Torn up judo points and blunts but the shaft kept on going.....
The trick is to have them good and straight before you seal them... Then don't use a water base seal.
 If I didn't like the smell of POC it's all I would use...

Passthru hardwoods from Twig Archery. Been using them for over 10 years.

Your arrow weight is a bit light but there are also other reasons for hand shock. Are your tips too heavy? With thicker, narrow tips you can reduce the physical weight without reducing the strength.
   I have used ash shafts with good results. My ash arrows came out to 600grs plus. Now I make my own arrows with sourwood and other hardwood shoots or cane and all are over 600grs.     Pat

Thanks for the info folks.Pat,my limb tips are just under 1/2''@ the string groove.And I have deer antler overlays on them.I'm shooting a dacronB50 string.And I've had several folks compliment my tiller.The only thing I could think of next was heavier arrows and maybe string silencers.I've checked out raptor's website and am giveing it serious consideration.Has anyone delt with FoxFire Archery?Is douglas fir or sitka spruce heavy shafts?I'm not the best at straighting shafts.So which of all the above mentioned shafts hold there straightness the best?I know its easier to shoot aluminum or carbon.I do with my recurve.But with a selfbow its gotta be wood.Thanks for everyones help.tradrick
