Just curious...some of you archers that have been at this for more years than me, did you use to put tanto tips on your broadheads in the 50's, 60's? Or is this a recent improvement? I have been using it on some heads because it makes sense...no personal experience to say it is better though.

Sometime back then a lot of guys simply filed a small chisel-like bevel on their heads basically to help in bone contact. At one point Bear even made Razorheads with the bevel on them.

They were not referred to as "Tanto" tips, but bowhunters have been rounding, squaring and otherwise losing the pointed tip on broadheads for years.  I am not certain that it helps in penetration (not certain it doesn't either)but it makes a ton of sense that it offers a stronger tip and...

we have often seen that once a tip starts to bend over, it goes.. period.  To keep a tip from bending, don't let it start.  Same idea as a straw in a storm, or an arrow into anything.  Straight on it is strong, on an angle... well, not so strong.

I say... if it makes you feel like it is a good thing.. certainy do it.

Yes.  Bear did chisel points.  Most trad hunters that I've known have over the past 40 plus years that I've been bow hunting have been taking the needle point off their points.  Not everyone did tanto points, of course.  That seems to work best on a Grizzly single bevel head.  But most rounded the point or did a chisel point, or blunted/increased the angle of the triangle on a three-blade head.

Did the same thing then as I do now, just grind a pointed tip back about 1/8" into a flat chisel....
