First Knife..... A Fumble Along....
« on: January 01, 2007, 12:15:00 PM »
Well as if I don't have enough hobbies (addictions) I thought I'd try my hand at knife building.... I'm going to eventually be working with tool grade steel like D-2 or A-1 but thought I'd get the feel for the process and tools using "junk" bandsaw blades from work.... Here's where I am so far;

Step one I cut the blades into 7" long strips;

Step two I drew the outline of the blade with a silver pencil:

Step three I cut and rough shaped the blade with a dremel tool, final shaped with a belt sander,drilled my pin holes,and then hand sanded the blade to ready it for polishing:

Now I have some questions for our real knife makers out there:
Here is the wood I'd like to use for my scales. How thick should it be??

And secondly, I'd like to have hidden pins on this blade. How do you do that and what do you use for pin material??...... Terry

Nice job, so far.
For the pins, you don't have to have them, make sure wood and metal is roughed up and use smooth on or other good epoxy to glue up.  Clamp it tight while the epoxy is setting.
Thickness of handle scales is entirely up to you.
If you want to use pins, I like to use 1/8" brass rod and cut it for pins.  You can use steel rod if you want the silver color (if you decide against blind pins).
Looking good!
Dan

looks good i tend to go with .5-3/8" scales for knife handles, you can always take material off, you cant put it back on.. looks great.
Smoooooth!!
