Information needed on "Texas Recurves Bows"

Howdy Folks,
I recently worked out a trade for my first TD recurve.  It is from a maker that I haven't been able to find any information about.
The bow is a Texas Recurves Brush Buck #52

Is this bowyer still in business?  Does anyone have any contact info for them?

Texas Recurve's were made by Rick and Curtis Byrd, Son and Father.  Last time i talked to Rick, in 2004,  he was selling the business.  I haven't heard much since then.  He really wasn't making many bows at that time.  

I know he use to make a longbows and a recurves and the recurve's were called Comanche's.

I will say that they are fantastic bow, if they fit your style of hunting.

Paul Brunner use to carry them in his catalog.  Thats what first got me turned on to them.

Never heard nothing but good about them.  I see classified adds looking to buy but rarely anyone selling.  Must mean they like them.  I've seen a few and thought they were nice looking.  If I ever get a chance I'd like to have one.

I just picked it up on my way home tonight.  It looks to be about 64" #52@28.  It says Texas Recurves on the lower limb and "Brush Buck" on the upper.  There is a very slight twist in the lower but she shot fine when I took here out in the backyard at 1 AM to fling a dozen.  The limbs are wood core with black glass and the riser had some really nice inlay striping.  I'll take some pictures before I head off to Colorado for my summer fly fishing trip.  Suffer as I must.

Doc, I have a Texas Recurve made by Rick Byrd and his dad Curtis.  I met both of them on an ad for a bow only hunting lease in Comfort Tx over 12 years ago.  The lease was only a mile from his shop in Comfort.  I learned from them on how to make bows.  Curtis passed away some time back, I was a pall bearer.  Rick, did not want to make the bows anymore but loved making self bows for himself.  Lost contact with Rick after we lost the lease.  All of his recurves were static recurves.  The only name I ever saw on these bows were Commanche or Kiowa.   Could be it was a special request by the origianl buyer of the bow to put that name on it.  This is first time I ever heard that the name Brush Buck was put on a Texas Recurve made by the Byrd's

I talked to Rick in 2005 and he had sold the business. After Curtis passed away, I don't think his heart was in it. I knew Curtis and Rick from the time I ordered my first custom bow from them in 1987. Curtis was the one who actually taught me to make bows and my first bow form was actually a copy of the "Comanche". Curtis and Rick were both awesome designers and builders...and I took Rick's direction in bow-building...design your own styles. Rick's "Apache" and several others were definitely of his own design and I have to say that with Curtis' "Comanche" and Rick's "Apache"...I've never seen another bow design within those classes of short and light shoot any better, faster or be more durable. I work internationally now in the Engergy and Chemical arena and have a bow-shop in Thailand where I teach bow-making and make bows for fun when I'm on my break from work. I've given away many bows...I've not taken an order to sell one in a long time because I have no idea when I could complete it. But I truly, truly love the art of bowmaking and desinging and my thoughts and memories are never far from Curtis and Rick Byrd as I sit at my workbench designing or making bows. I thank God for allowing me to meet and know  both those gentlemen and am so truly thankful to them for taking the time to teach me to make bows. P.S. I agree with sidebuster, I never saw or heard about the model you mention...Rick's Apache was normally a 58" longbow and the "kiowa" was basically a longbow with recurve tips for lack of better description. Rick dearly loved self-bows. I once gave him an old longbow made by Nels Grumley, bowmaker for Bear Archery when it first got going. As was pretty common for the 30's and 40's...this bow was only about a 35# draw...but it was pretty long. Pretty soon Rick had shortened it a bit and re-tillered it and had himself a really good hunting bow. This bow was of Osage, and I saw many Osage bows that Rick made and he REALLY had a knack for making really good shooting, low-shock bows!

i have acommanche recurve it is afantastic bowi got a250lb pig with it 15 years ago plugged it perfect behind the last rib arrow came out his chest my hunting buddy had ahigh dollar compound bow and missed his shot at the other pig its not for sale
