Heres about all I'll get done today,picked a couple boards for the riser,the Ipe is too short for lams and the osage has a big knot in the other end so it won't make lams either.

He wanted a dark bow,so the Ipe in the riser should be dark and make a fairly heavy riser. I talked him into some osage for contrast,gonna put a 1/4" x 2 1/2" piece sandwiched between 2 pcs of 3/4" Ipe for the I-beam type riser(is that right?)

Then we'll saw an osage flair in the riser block after we square it up.

I've got some nice walnut,so we'll use some flat grain walnut for the limb core and veneers.Walnut makes a great limb IMO.

OK,here we go,pretty busy today,my middle son in the AF came home for leave,big plot to surprise the ol man,and they did!!

Here we are ready to glue up..

Glue applied mostly..

A little trick to stop slippage,wrap in plastic wrap,put a couple little blocks on either side in a couple places and clamp before you put the main clamps on...

Makes it easy to keep lined up..

Here we are ready to put in the hotbox,retighten all clamps to be sure as glue squeezes out you have a good bond.

Yep, 60 grit thru the thickness sander,no probs so far on other bows. I have roughed them even more,but didn't today.

Kennym, do you have any concerns about putting the riser back in the oven when you do the rest of the glue up? Does the compression keep everything together and the glue just cures harder? I have been wanting to use smooth on the same way but I just have'nt got a "ya it works great, no probs" kind of response. Thanks for the build along!

I had some concerns about that,so I made a piece of plywood to block direct heat from the riser part of the form. Done half a dozen that way with no problems. I think as long as you keep the glue a bit cooler than the original temp,it'll be OK. JMHO

Ground lams while the 1st glueup on the riser cooked,......

Then this AM,cut into the riser block and found a nice pc. of osage for the flair,last min. decided to put some .020 padauk in between!

Test fit...

Then back to the oven....

Thanks guys,
Randy- just sawed er on the lines,(on the waste side),marked the radii with the top and bottom of a 5 gal bucket! LOL Then spindle sanded the inner radius of each piece. Then lightly clamp the pieces together with one slightly proud of the other on the edge and run an eversharp pencil around the joint,then take the outer radius to the disc sander and take it to the line.Much easier than it sounds,hope I didn't confuse everyone on that!!LOL

Got just a little more done,I grind the back of the riser first then the belly.The back has to fit the form,then get fade thickness on the belly side(not done on this one yet)

It looks sweet so far. I am starting to think about my next bow and am paying close attention to your riser. Very nice choice of woods.

I really like your drum sander infeed/outfeed tables. Can ya send my a set? :D

Can't wait to see more.
