50 lbs. Longbow and Wennsel Woodsman
« on: June 15, 2008, 01:00:00 AM »
I'm shooting 51 lbs out of a Black Widow Longbow. Is a Wennsel Woodsman a good head to hunt with?  Deer/ hogs....

Or should I go with a two blade?

Thanks.
Blessings,
Steve

You should have no problem with that draw weight and that head. That is my opinion though.

I've had better success with 2 blade. JMO. WW has failed on me in the past.

I should think that would be just fine. As long as the head is sharp and the arrow well tuned ou should be in good shape.

I put a 3 blade snuffer in one side and out the other  on a nice buck the other year  at 30 yards using a 48# longbow.

A 2 blade head MAY give you more margin for error.

if you go with a 3 blade go with the snuffer ss.  Stronger and less prone to failure, WW are sketchy IMO

It will work well and should give you two holes.I still prefer a bigger two blades for hogs however. The woodsman has always worked great but my Simmons puts more blood on the ground on hogs but on a decent hit hogs go down a lot quicker than deer anyway so it is not needed a lot.

With 50# holding weight, any sharp 2, 3, or 4 blade head has the potential to kill deer provided yer aim is true.  I prefer Woodsman broadheads over Snuffers, and 11 or 12 GPP arras with a good 25 to 30% FOC.  YMMV.

I used Woodsmans on 2016's out of a 54@27 longbow one year. I shot straight through a 140lb doe and a 180lb buck.  Short drew by about two inches on the doe and still blew through both lungs.  The buck was a heart shot and the head came out low and stuck in the off leg.  Both were dead inside of 50 yds.

Keep the arrow weight up and you shouldn't have any problems as long as you hit them where you should.

Ace Super Express 175 Grain. Ever see what they look like Pastor Steve? They look like a necker knife on the end of an arrow. I will be shooting them this season because with my torn rotater cuff and my average bow  weight of  47 pound longbows. I will be shooting them. Terry used one on that big, old, ugly hog he just shot. Check his thread. I put in a 42 grain screw in adapter for my carbons. So 217 grains of flying death.

I like the two blade....I know lots of guys on this site swear by the WW but both myself and a buddy (on the same hunt) had problems with the Woodsman with penetration.  Maybe we just didn't know how to sharpen them correctly but they seemed sharp to us at the time.

Personal experience is that the Snuffer bends a little easier than the Wensels. But, I have shot Snuffers, Wensels and STOS 2 blades and all are excellent heads. The most important issue is correct shaft spine to get them to fly well, and then getting them as sharp as possible.

Remember the big ole carbon steel Satillite 175gr 2 blade heads they discontinued a while back? Found em discounted at a local Dick's, 3 heads in a pack for $1. Bought all they had, around 20 packs. I'll be using 2 blades for a while...

Jerry, I remember those Satallites. I used to love those BH's. I'm gonna check out Dick's.

I've prolly killed a hundred hogs with three blade heads. I only shoot 55#. Two blades just don't leave enough of a hole.

I'm with Biggie on this one.  After seeing what another hunter did with a WW on a hog hunt, I had to try them.  That year I shot an elk with on and had the largest entry and exit hole I have ever had.  Been using them for six years now and have had great blood trails with happy endings.

BTW most of the time I was shooting all natural bows in the 55# range.

I killed a 2000# Buffalo with a WW and a 70# longbow, penetraited to the fletch....so I recon you won't have any problem killing a little o'l deer with a 51# bow and a WW.

WW's are tuff heads, as I use them a lot for small game and they can take a lot of abuse.  Just make sure you get em sharp...

Oh, I hear 3 Rivers finally got the manufacurer of the heads to straighted out the waivy bevel, so they should be easier to sharpen.

Yeah Terry, I heard the same about three rivers WWs.

51#s is alot of #s, plenty enough for most any Bhd you want to shoot. No experience with WWs but with many others 3 and 2 bladed. just the looks of the WW I cant see why it wont penetrate.
