Who makes a short fast recurve?
« on: February 19, 2007, 05:41:00 PM »
Who makes a short fast recurve with no stacking at 29".  I have a Fedora 52" Stalker now which I like but would consider getting a similar bow around 54" with a bit more heft in the riser section.  Checked out the Morrison site but didn't see anything that would fit this.  Heard Bob Lee has a new small bow out and I know bear makes one but I don't think any of these would be fast enough for my liking.  Suggestions or experiences are appreciated please...

Thats a pretty big order, 29" draw no stacking at 54"?? I would try one of Bob Morrison's Shawnees with 54" limbs. See what it shoots like for you and talk to Bob, he can make the riser any way you want it. Only other thought would be a Shrew, take a look and see what Ron has in that range. You will have a hard time bettering a Shawnee with Arapahoe limbs for speed.

Thanks guys.  Keep the suggestions coming.  My Fedora does not stack but I had to play a bit with the brace height to achieve that.  Most of these kind of bows out there don't recommend a draw length over 27 or 28" (such as the new Bob Lee 54" hunter recurve and from what I have seen on Morrision's site as well).  I draw 28 1/2".

Rivers Edge Recurves has a 54" Arroyo that is supposed to smoke an arrow, but that may pinch a bit at 28.5"s. I will know in about an hour as I am waitng on a call from them. Shawn

The Bear SuperMag would prolly fit your liking. However, I think you ask for too much in a short bow, my friend.

A 52" Saluki Scythian, I have had about 3 guys with 30+ draws shoot my bow with no problem.

Suggest you take a test drive on the Black Widow PSR.   BW has a good try it out program that'll only cost you shipping fees.  The bow comes as a 1 piece or 2 piece, with a longbow grip or a recurve grip, the wait isn't too terribly long to have one built and the customer service is legendary.  If you buy new you can get as fancy or plain as you want.  This line of bows are new as of 2005 but there are enough built now that they show up on the used market fairly often.

A check to there website indcated that the "recommend" a 56" bow for your draw length, but I'd still give the 54" a try.  If you build new the bowyer can structure those limbs specifically to our (yours and mine) draw length of 29 inches....Hey if you don't like the thing after it's built call me and I'll probably buy it.  :wavey:

Thanks Mike for the recommendation.   The only thing that has held me back from BW's in the past is their speed.  Is this bow faster than their standard recurve?

Checked out the Widow web-site and it looks like the riser would be very small/light.  56" does look like the ticket.

I can't comment on the speed of Black Widow, I'm not a speedy guy, other attributes of a bow are far more important to me than speed.  I guess you lays your money down and takes your chances...

To bad it has to be a recurve, The Super Shrew Classic Hunter is 54" and there is absolutely no finger pinch and I draw 29 inches as well. It's very smooth and fast enough for me but I am not a speed guy either!

Check out Ron LaClair's Shrew Scout Lil Favorite.  The bow is a gem and shoots a nice arrow.  It is a 54" recurve.

Look for an old Daymond Howatt Highspeed. Inexpensive, fast and short. You won't regret it.
