Had a long talk with JD Lund tonite.
« on: June 27, 2008, 08:19:00 PM »
Well folks, it's about time I treated myself abit, so I called up JD and we're finalizing the options for a new 60" MOJO STIK, 53-55#@28".

I chose to go with Ebony riser with a Cocobolo flair. It'll have matching overlays on the riser back, and Cocobolo veneers with possibly moose antler limb tips.

Not quite certain on the limb core just yet, thinking about Boo....or possibly Osage...
Any suggestions for limb cores?

P.S. Everyone is so right about JD being a good guy to do business with. I'm kinda going on faith that the riser grip will fit as described, but I've tried an old Pearson Predator that had a good palm swell with a thumb rest and I liked that so this should be fine.

The boo cored long bow that 7 Lakes glued up for me is the smoothest longbow I've pulled.
Fairly quick for a (very) mild R/D longbow, too.
The elm and maple cored bows I have aren't bad, but the boo DOES make for a smoother pull.
Haven't tried an osage cored bow, . . . . . yet!

I have shot a few of his bows with Osage and Boo cores...I think they were both about the same, or at least I couldn't tell.  I can tell you they all were smoother than my Savannah by a lot.  I shot a 58" Voodoo that made my carbons scream, but I think I'm going to go with either a 60" or 62".  Funny I was shooting a 46# bow all spring and when I shot the 56# Voodoo it didn’t feel 10 pounds more, just a very nice bow.

The 56# Voodoo I shot felt lighter than my 50# Savannah I believe that bow had Boo for cores.  I had to look twice at the weigh to confirm what I was shooting and I’m sure the look on my face was complete surprise.

I believe the boo cores are an upgrade so if your going to go all in go for it.

Your bow is going to look amazing...about like the bottom bow on his website.  If you’re a blind hunter that bow is going to disappear in the darkness.

I'm also about to finalize a bow with him, talked to him this morning also.  I think I woke him up...Jim if you’re reading sorry about that.  He’s working nights and doing this on his off time…so he’s busy to say the least.

I have bamboo cores in mine and it's quick. Anymore, I prefer bamboo, fels smoother and seems to have that extra snap getting an arrow downrange.

Well Josh, I don't hunt from blinds much, but the deep evergreens here sure cast alot of shadows, so I think it'll work out well.
Thanks

there is a difference in bamboo and any other material offered in Whisperstik bows.  I have shot a great many Whispertiks as I used to live close to JD.  The difference in my opinion is a big one.

I would absolutely recommend bamboo.  Ive shot mojos and voodoos with walnut, osage, red elm, bamboo, etc. and boo was the best

Opinion only

And I will wholeheartedly agree that JD is a total class act and excellent bowyer.

I have two Mojostik's with bamboo cores.  Go with that.

Well, go big or go home they say.....looks like I'll go with the recommendations here and from what I've learned over time and order the boo core.

Now the last question is....58 or 60" for a 27-28" draw length....JD says flip a coin, he personally prefers 60". Any comments?

Thanks guys.

Either length will work at your draw.

Either length will be fine. I have fallen in love with the 56" (I have the first prototype) and havent shot the 60" much at all since. Any are fine and I have 29.5" draw. If you like the shorter bow, go with it and you wont be sorry.

I draw 27 inches and I went with a 60" bow. Oh yeah, definitely bamboo cores.

I've talked to JD again this weekend and settled my options:
Macassar Ebony riser with a Cocobolo flair and osage accent strips along the Coco'.. It'll have matching overlays on the riser back, and Cocobolo veneers in the limbs with ....yes, Osage core. I liked the idea of Osage when I first talked to JD and I'll likely not see the difference at 60"...actually I flipped a coin while we were on the phone talking!  :D  (His suggestion too!) Also comes with moose antler limb tips. Gonna have him raise a slight thumb rest similar to the old Pearson Predator which I like.....

I'll likely be in NY state in August so I can pick it up then. Can't wait....Christmas comes early for me this year.

Thanks for the input guys, it really helped but in the end I'm happy with the choices.
