single-bevel 3 blade?
« on: June 30, 2008, 10:45:00 PM »
This is just totally thinking out loud, but I was wondering about the possibility such a thing.
1.  Is it possible
2.  I wonder how it would perform

has anybody tried such a thing?

seems I read someone tried it but it weakened the blades so much that they failed. Tried it on a Snuffer I believe, what other 3 blades would be beefy enough to try it on?

I tried a single bevel snuffer but the grinding of the blades did not leave enough blade for strength or weight.

I think if the vents were very small or not there at all it would definitely be possible.

It's not really do-able with the Snuffer/Woodsman type head.

I have done it with MA-3's however and it worked very well.  I haven't gotten any farther with the experiment other than seeing if it could be done.  But they take to it easily, are very sharp and fly great.

Part of the kicker on the single bevel improvement though is the steel must be very hard to support the thin cutting edge. I wouldn't say the MA-3's particularly qualify in that regard.

I think you could do it on any 3 blade if you could get them unground but I would think the mechanical advantage you gain from the single bevel would only work if the bevels are oppositely opposed (as in a 2 blade). Adding in the 3rd blade would seem to negate the "wedge" effect you get from the opposing angles of the 2 blade.

I would also think they would be much more difficult to sharpen than with the standard "flat file" method most commonly use with 3 blades.

Not worth it in my opinion...if you are going to try single bevel, go with a 2 blade.

Besides as the good Doctor continually tries to beat into my thick head, "there is no direct correlation between # of blades and better blood trails or better animal recovery." He's still trying to convert me...but like I said, I'm stubborn.

It "could" be done and the bevel would still be working together with the same side push against the bevel as a 3 blade however it's not likely to give ya the same bone splitting that a 2 blade single bev would and it would be a pain in the butt to get it on a 3 blade

I'd think the 3 blade will have about the same splitting power useing a double bevel since it force's the gap wider faster than it's 2 blade counterpart.

There's trade off's both ways and neither will make an animal any deader IMO but than again I'm not huntin cape buff either

You guys all make good sense.  I'm not very technicaly inclined, but I did figure they would be a pain to sharpen that way.  Well, that keeps me from wasting my time with anyhow!

I agree with Swampbuck.  In fact, if Dr. Ashby feels like doing another study, I would like to know what splits bone better: single bevel two blade broadheads, or double bevel three blade broadheads.

The next logical step here folks..........is the single bevel four blade broadhead.  **images of shaving razors, this is what happens when gillette starts making broadheads**

That way you could take advantage of a double wedge effect that would be sure to be able to bust through any bone on any animal.  Head shots would not only be viable but probably the recommended vital spot from hence forth.

Some ultra trick jig would have to be devised to sharpen them

Biggie, like I said, them's the Doc's words, not mine. He's got mountains of data to prove it, I only got a little in comparison to the contrary, so I stopped arguing with him. I'm stubborn, I still think 2,3, and 4 blades are all pretty much equal...killed critters with all of em and the only ones lost had nothing to do with # of blades.

I know JC....but anyone who thinks that 9" of cutting surface isn't better than 6" of cutting surface has some flaws in his testing proceedures.

I'm with you JC.

I'm late getting into reading all these studies but I'd need to see the experiments replicated by additional, independent (not soon coming out with a new broad head or any kind of tie-in like that) researchers with ALL the variables controlled for before I stopped shooting what's proven to work.  Then I would still need to run out of the broad heads I already have before switching. Dead is dead.

My first bow kill was with the old razorback 5 blade.Zipped right thru and looked like a slug hole. The blood trail was foot long squits out both sides that looked like it was done with a paint brush,a grade schooler coulda followed that blood trail

would it bust the scalpula????don't know it busted ribs just fine tho

not arguing against data thatd be silly but sometimes it sounds like the carbon penatrates better than wood arguement....sure it does but thru is thru and dead is dead

I guess if your set up is marginal ya should take the docs advise or if that's what floats your boat even, the main reason I,m shootin 3 blade heads is their of my own making....I've got a 2 blade head in the works too but not because I feel the need for that extra little bit

Enjoy the holiday weekend guys I'm outta here for the next 10 days YEEEEEEEEEE HAAAAAAAAAAAAA
Shoot straight and have FUN!!
