Nice story John, can't think of a better way to end the year than to spend it hunting with a close friend and then with your family.

Thanks guys.  Darren's got a new house, 2 kids heavy into sports, a busy job and little time to visit here, unfortunately.  He wishes everyone well.

I've had a fun day.  I recently got interested in using the whole deer instead of letting over half of it go to waste.  I'm brain tanning hides, boiling bones for grease, making hoof rattles and other stuff.  Expect some cool stuff this bow-making and buildalong season as a result.

JK

I got a sad tale for you my friend.  The long and short of it is I killed a buck with a smokepole this year.  Plenty of opps to take smaller deer with the stick but I passed.  When I did decide to shoot it was at a 140 class 10 pt.  12 yds broadside.  Good shot location (or so I thought), Good penetration, (15 inches of shaft inside him with a Snuffer SS on the business end) good blood for a half mile, then nothing.  And I mean nothing.  Blood trail just stopped.  Did a grid search for 3 days...nothing.  I've started to think that perhaps I clipped the bottom right lung and maybe some heart, without hitting the aorta, and missed the left lung entirely.  I keep telling myself that big deer can live on one lung and that he's still out there.  Many sleepless nights over that one.

Hey man....it's 2007!!!  Cloverdale is only 6 months away!!!!!

It sounds like a one lunger to me. I helped a guy trail one like that 2 years ago. A great blood trail for several hundred yds, blood in the bed but no deer. He's probably still out there. Don't beat yourself up too much.

Sounds like a nice "short and sweet" hunt for two long lost buddies.  And a nice warm up for the October hunt in 2007.  Congratulations.

You can bet on me being at Cloverdale.

You know, I am one lucky hunter the last couple years.  I was filling out my hunting log last night.  I have only hunted on 4 separate occasions this year here in Indiana.  5 last year.

Bow in October left me wishing for a Scent Lok or less sensitive deer in swirly winds.  I did kill a squirrel  :)

Gun in November resulted in a buck.  A hunt with my daughter had intangibles but no meat.

And this hunt brings home a deer and great times.

Last year, over a stretch of 4 straight hours of hunting, I killed 3 deer  :)

Sometimes it's better to be lucky than good.  I wish I could hunt more but then what would I do with all that meat - hehehe.

Please don't take this as bragging, just a wild stretch.  I've hunted harder and better and not brought home anything most times.  I'm seriously thankful for all my blessings.  You all included.

John...good to see the two of you out having fun!  Tell Darren I miss his presence here on the gang....I know he has responsibilities and time can be short.   Nice deer and sounds like a great year for you.  Hope 2007 is even better!

Thanks again all!

I just talked to Darren.  He can't do Tradgang at work and doesn't have his home computer set up.  I told him you guys were asking about him.  He appreciates it and is going to try to make Cloverdale.

See ya' all later.

John
