Bow refinishing

I just bought an original Paul Schafer Silvertip from a fellow Tradganger. Although it is in good shape, it could use a little sprucing up. Is refinishing an option I can do, or is it something I should leave up to a pro?

I definately don't want to loose the lettering on the riser and limbs that Paul put on.

I think they always look better when a pro does it, I usally try to send them back to who ever made it, that way they can remark it like it is supposed to be.

Droptine 59, also known as Rich, is the expert you want to talk to.  Look for him here and give him a call.  He has photos on his website where he refinished bows and the silkscreen/lettering/labels look great.

Coming from a long time woodworker, and builder of fine crafted furniture. "Refinishing" ia a whole different ball game.....THE most important part is knowing what the original finish was. or being knowlegable enough to test it. if you are insistant on doing it yourself, and it doesn't have dings in it that need deep sanding. I would recomend using 4 ought steel wool and a good exterior polyurithane. DO NOT USE Laquer or spar varnish. Poly is pretty compatible with most finishes if lightly sanded or roughed ou with fine steel wool. Play with one small apot and test the waters.....Its tough to pull off a profesional job..... if you are not a profesional.... If you are dealing with a fiber glass finish....you are on your own there...my .02 cents.....Kirk

T, if I knew how to post pics, I would. It's a pretty plain bow. Walnut diamondwood riser with a small accent stripe, actionwood limbs stained to match. Sure is neet having one of Paul's bows.

If you have the money, go pro.  If not, gratification is still a plus of doing it yourself.  There are a couple of other threads around this joint about refinishing, just try a search in the Pow Wow.  
After talking with all these fine people, I am sure you have you bow perfect in no time.

droptine59  does a great job of refinishing.he has done a few for people on this sight look him up he is on this site from time to time

DO NOT use steel wool on fiberglass.  Only as a final buff on an applied finish after all sanding and finishing had been done, should you want to.  On raw glass the slightest catch on an errant micro sliver can spell disaster.

I emailed the Wendauers who make the Silvertips now. I'm going to send it to them to get refinished. I really want it to look like new and i might have snakeskins added.
