Grizzly Stik advice
« on: July 19, 2008, 04:10:00 PM »
I just received my Grizzly Stik Sitkas in the mail today and need a little advice on tuning them.
I have read that they have a "spine" or stiff side due to way they are made and one way to find it is to roll them on a flat surface. I recently remodeled a bathroom and kept a 36" square mirror that was on the wall, I plan on rolling them on that old mirror tonight. One question I have is: Once I determine the spine side, how should I align the nocks? My mind says either stiff side against the riser or up, would this be correct?

Another question I have is about point weight with the sitkas, I want to go as heavy  as possible with good flight. I have several options, I have Grizzly 190s, Zwicky No Mercy 130gr, and Woodsman 125gr. I also have a 75 and 100gr steel adapters, brass inserts etc.. to play with point weight.
What do you all think would be the max point weight for these bows:
Black Widow PLV 45-46#
Tomahawk Diamnond Series Desert Fox 52#
Martin Serengeti recurve 48#
All are at 27-27.5" draw length
Thank you all very much in advance.
John

Although not a fan of the grizz sticks, ya should make sure the the stiff side is against bow. You should also be able to shoot most any weight ya want if ya cut them to 28.5"s from 175 to 275 from those bows. They are supposed to let you shoot a wide range of spine. I myself could not get them to tune well and Arrow dynamics were more consistent for me. Shawn

Thanks for the input Shawn,
I've heard both good and bad about the Grizzly Stiks, thought I'd give them a try.
I have heard a lot of positives about the Arrow Dynamics.
For my bows  should I try the Trads or Trad Lights?
and any opinion on the Carbon Express heritage?
As you can guess I am really interested in the weight forward designs!
Thanks again,
John

Well, rolling the Grizzly Stiks on the mirror definitely showed the "spine side".
I rolled each shaft once and put a chalk mark on the side that landed down.
I then rolled each shaft 20 times, and 17-20 times, they always landed with the chalk mark down.
Now on to bareshafting and experimenting with the different point weights.
Any input from my last post on the Arrow Dynamics trads or trad lights and the Carbon Express Heritage is greatly appreciated.

James Wrenn told me he plugged the ends and put them in the bath tub. The stiff side will float down. DB

batman,
Thanks! Great idea. I just happen to have a bunch of little corks I use to make fly rod "poppers" with.
I'll try that tomorrow to re-confirm what I found by rolling the shafts.
This place is a wealth of knowledge!
