Snakeskinned my V- archer bow
« on: July 20, 2008, 04:27:00 PM »
In an attempt to give mtself some good mojo for my first ever deer hunt, I skinned my beautiful  longbow made by V-archery in the Netherlands. This bow is fast and quiet. I was hesitant to do it to such a beautiful bow, but I really like the way it turned out!

Easy to do. Apply Titebond II or III.The first coat is like a primer or sizing coat. While the glue is drying, soak the skins in lukewarm water. After the glue dries, apply a second coat of glue. Blot the skins on a towel and then lay them on the bow taking your time to center them. Pysh the air bubbles out with your finger or popsickle stick. Once they set up, trim the edges with a razor blade. If you trim them before they dry completely you can wipe the excess glue off with a damp rag or sponge. Some people wrap the skins with ace bandages after they apply them. I have done that, but these I didn't and they turned out great. When you soak the skins and lay them on the bow they kind of hang over the edges nice. When you wrap them with bandages sometimes the skins move around on you a little. After they dry completely, apply a piece of duct tape over the skins and press lightly. Carefully pull the tape off to remove the excess scales. Apply poly or some kind of finish. Hope that was clear enough. Brian

Hi Brian,

Looks great, good job. How does the bow shoot with the new backing? Are the new strings satisfactory?

I saw this bow before skinning, so I know why you hesitated. I think it came out great bro! I miss all the good stuff now that the State has me working almost every waking hour.
Nicely done. What do you need to be ready by the fall?

Arnold, there is no noticeable difference in performance. It shot great before the skins and it shoots great now. The bow is extremely quiet. I absolutely love it! Thanks for the extra strings! You build a great bow!

Jamie, I need someone to push some deer to me so I can git me one o' dem critters!
