Which broad head do i need to use?
« on: July 23, 2008, 01:39:00 PM »
i know there have been a million post of this. but my question is this: Should i use a 2 blade or a 3 blade with a 50 ish lb recurve?

I have been pondering this because i am considering going hunting for the first time this fall.

I heard 2 blades get better penetration and that 3 blades should be used with heavier bows.

I really like the zwickey eskimos as a 2 blade but the woodsmans seem to take the cake when it comes to a three blade....

Thanks C.D. Works

Either will work nicely on deer size animals.  To help you decide, try a few of each to see how they fly for you and how well you can sharpen them.

I love broadheads and I dont hesitate to use as many as I can through the different seasons.  If you are hunting any medium sized animal in north america either will work.  Woodsmans or snuffers are strong options for three blades.  If you want heavier weight though you have to go with Snuffers.  Any reputible 2 blade is fine for deer and hogs as well.  The zwickey is great as well as a host of others.  I like zwickeys, grizzlys, Aboyers, STOS, and all magnus heads.

And heed Orion and Desert Dudes advice and make sure you can sharpen them mercilessly sharp.

I prefer a 2 blade for my 52 lb bw psa and 50 lb. bob lee but always use bleeder blades.  I shoot old lime green razorheads along with the 145 grain Stainless razoreads.  I used to use magnus stingers as well.  They were great heads and performed well.  I'm just cheap.   Since the razorheads are no longer commercially available, I would recommend the stingers any day of the week.  I found that all of the above were very accurate (if your bow is tuned and your arrows are properly spined ) but my blood trails suffered without the bleeder blades. I've never seen any change in impact as a result of the bleeder blade either.  Sorta best of both worlds.  Good luck.  Its good to have these kind of problems.

It's a win-win situation. However, my experience with 2 blade heads is that while they are deadly, I have had less than desirable blood trails so I like multiblade heads. The design of the woodsman enhances penetration (many claiming it penetrates as well as a 2 blade)....so based on that I personally think that the woodsman would be my choice between the two.

That is the only right answer that there is and is exactly why I shoot the head that I shoot. dino

Cody, come to the ASTB shoot in Tannahill and talk to John at Sipsey River or Lynn at Harrelson Traditional Archery, between those two and maybe Kim, you ought to be able to find something.  There are a lot of very experianced bow hunters there, most of them will brag...inform you of their likes in hunting broadheads.
