Rose shoot foreshaft ?
« on: January 01, 2007, 07:53:00 PM »
I'm building arrows from natural materials lately and have some rose shoots that won't make length.
Is rose to light density to consider using for foreshaft material on cane?

Rusty, Doesn't rose have a pithy center? If so they probably wouldn't be the best foreshafts. Are they long enough to add fore shafts to make them into arrows?    Pat

The shoots were gathered last week so they are still in the arranging for straight stage. I planned to use them as full length and the thought of foreshafts onto the shorter ones hadn't crossed my mind as a way to salvage them.

Well! The base is a temp. piece of plywood scrap. Will use a piece of walnut  cut eliptical.

Very nice Rusty. They look simular to what I make except I don't use foreshafts. I do scorch for coloration and use red silk to wrap. Also, your arrow stand looks nice. The walnut will set if off great.   Pat

Howdy Larry,

Ready for Ojam?  The rose shoots I cropped I found at Talala Crk. A regular close to home uncrowded haunt for me, right over the lake from you. Their just wild roses and they were growing here and there under, of all things some osage, he he. Still drying and straightening them.

The photo arrow is:  Martha Steward cane, turkey feathers from the property in Mo., 3rivers knapped hunting pt. hafted on dogwood, pine pitch, artificial sinew. Dowel reinforced self nock. Antler in display is vintage 1967.

I'd like to use the arrow on an unspecified special critter.

Larry,

Go rabbit hunting in the thick stuff up around Winganon, you'll find it. Its nicknamed, wait-a minute-vine.

I'll bring some dry stuff to Ojam for you.

About how thick are the shoots when you harvest them?  And can long branches on more mature rose bushes work?

JStark,

At the base where cut, from 5/16+ to 3/8+ and very slight taper to nock end on most. I don't have a clue what flight any will have. The archers in this house range from #20 thru #50 draws. Hope I can cover someones requirements.

Can't reliably comment on a mature plant except that if the branch has a tough woody growth from the year before it may not be the best choice. Side branches aren't a issue, the wild ones I find don't have any.

Thats kind of what I thought Rusty. I've got scars from wading through that stuff around Winganon. One of these days we are gonna have to get together and do some shooting and maybe see if we can't slay a few stumps or maybe a rabbit or two.

Well, as soon as the wife is able to get around on her own I'll get in touch and we'll see if we can't hook up. And so far I'm still planning on OJAM.
