Holy crap!
« on: August 09, 2008, 03:23:00 PM »
This kid I know who is 12 wants to learn how to hunt so today I took him on a scouting trip. We went and hit a spot where ive never been way in the Hemlocks near our swamp. Anyhow we found no joke around 35-40 diffirent rubs ive never seen anything like it in my life. My guess is because the spot is so secluded and no one goes in there the bucks feel safe.

So heres my question im confident that atleast one of these rubs is from a big buck just because of its location and ive seen big one near this area. Ok so I found spot thats open and theres bedding areas off to my left and it just feels like a good spot. Then up the hill there seems to be a faint trail which ive read means its a big buck trail because their faint or almost not visible. And theres rubs all pointing in the direction of the trail common sense says sit here but my gut tells me the other spot. Where would you guys sit? Mind you I gotta have this deer in longbow range which is 30 yards or less.

I would set up a few diffent stands in the best spots.i would set them to take advantage of a few different winds paying particular attention to the spots that put you in postion to take advantge of the prevailing winds in your area.

i would not overhunt the area to much.Be careful of your scent.I would hunt the prime locations near the bedding areas during the peak rut where the does should be.The core area

The fainter trail and or trails may be a good bet for an ambush early in the early season and or any food sources near these fainter buck trails.

If you know where this buck beds you might get a crack at him leaving the bedding area near dark or around 1st light in the morning.

sounds like a great  situation you got thier.Play it smart and it should be a great oppertunity.I hunt some deep woods bucks and These are some things I do.I mainly like to be low impact and slip in and out with little disturbance and keep the wind from broadcating my prescence as much as possible.

I get more dareing as the rut peaks and gun season is right around the corner. Then i try and get right in the core of the core erea so to speak because times running out and I am more prone to risk spooking them a bit then to try and close the deal.

dont know if i answered your ?n but its food for thought anyway.

good luck, sounds like a super spot your onto. The kind i scout hard for myself

..oh sweet mystery of life I finally found you...

Use your judgement - I would not tromp around there anymore- go with the spot you had planned.

Have the deer lost their velvet where you are? Just last night I saw over a half dozen bucks from small to HUGE - all in velvet ( whitetails).
THE VOICES HAVEN'T BOTHERED ME SINCE I STARTED POKING THEM WITH A Q-TIP.

All the bucks ive seen are still in velvet they should rub it off next month. From the looks of it I can only hunt if the wind is blowing one direction which would be in my face naturally. I may not be able to hunt this spot often but I see it being a hot rut spot.

I would set up 20- 25 yards downwind of that rub line.
Get up close and personal... hunt traditional
