for those who use the BIG snuffers......
« on: August 10, 2008, 09:33:00 PM »
I am curious to hear what your setups are. Arrow weight compared to bow weight. I have a 53# 28.5 recurve shooting axis 400's with a finished weight of 562. I have some of the 145 grain glue on snuffers with 100 grain steel adapters. This setup shoots these arrows like darts. I am curious to know if this setup would be sufficient for deer or would I need to bump arrow weight and or go to one of my heavier recurves? I shoot this bow more with more accuracy then any other I have. I really want to use these snuffers but wanted to hear others experiences. Thanks !!!

Sounds perfect to me. Plenty of what it takes. You might want more arrow weight for bigger animals, but that's fine for deer. Shooting the bow well counts for a lot.

I have 2 bows that are using the same 60-65# arrows topped with 160 grn Snuffers. Total weight of arrows are from 680 - 715grn. Lengths are 29.5 - 27" The shorter arrows are for the Shrew 52#@26" Original 54" Shrew & 68" 51#@24" ROP ( Red Oak Pyramid) bow I made from a 2X2X72" Red Oak Board.

The Shafts are ASH, 12 of them are from Eric that gave them  to me because he switched to carbons

Brack.. i would not hunt with the big snuffers unless you can get them Razor, Razor, Razor-Serrated sharp..They do alot of cutting and need some heavy stroke behind them to cut their way through due to their size. Obviuosly the goal is to shoot through the animal for maximun blood trail exit and entrance....I advise sharpening with Snuffer Tamer ( files) and polish strop with leather and rouge.....I like a 20-22 degree shoulder on my blade.....their awesome heads but setup is secondary after getting these heads razor sharp.  good luck
Aim down your arrow because thats where it's going.

Brack,

Can do.  You're well advised to get them extremely sharp and be sure of your accuracy. Penetration will not be as good (on average) as a 2 blade, but there is merit to the concept of big hole = big blood. Ultimately, accuracy is the primary factor in getting a quick kill.

Love my 160's on a 380-400 grain cedar shaft, they make a big hole and a short blood trail.
Just one more step please!

I love the 160 grain for Black Bears....my swagged 2117's weigh in at 538 grains and fly like darts from my 57# bows....Kempf and Groves.
I hone mine up using a 10 mil bastard file, then finish them on a ceramic stick.
