String serving help
« on: August 13, 2008, 10:36:00 AM »
I am really getting into string making. I can twist a passable Flemish string now, but I am having trouble with the serving.
Do I serve in the same direction as the twist, or in the other direction?
How do I get my serving tool to spin around the string? I try to spin it, if the tension is too tight it will not spin. Loosen the tension a little and it will spin about 6 turns or untill it causes the string to twist tight enough to send the tool spinning backwards. Then if I really back the tension off after a few turns the whole thing goes shooting across the room, and I have to race the cat to get there first, then wind it all back up and start over.
(sigh) So you can see this procedure has become quite an experience. PLEEEEEZE any assistance would be great. Thank You.

Turn the serving with the twist of the string. So when you twist your string to adjust you brace hight, you don`t loosen your serving.  ;)  As far as tension goes, keep it tight, but go slow at first so it`s done right.Getting that babby to spin the whole way across takes practice. Some servers are easier to adjust than others.Good Luck.

What bushytail said.  I've never been able to spin the server.  Just keep wrapping/turning it over and over by hand.  A little slower, but allows me to keep consistent tension on the serving.  Good luck.

Some serving jigs aren't heavy enough to spin well...another problem is the jig tension gets tighter or loosens as its rotated, with a lot of the problem  being the label on the end of the serving spool creating friction. The old Cajun servers spin well because their heavy enough to maintain momentum, while adjusted tight. I've added stick on lead wheel weights to servers to get the weight up enough for them to spin well...makes serving a string a 1 min job!
