Antler points..

I have been messen around with primitive arrows, tying on turkey feathers and doing self nocks. I now want to try making my field points from deer antlers. Anyone ever done that?
I thought about cutting a 1 inch piece of anter off the rack, drilling a 1/4 inch hole in one end, then using a reamer to get my hole angle. Then glue it on the shaft and then tapering the point to shape.
Any suggestions or pictures? Thanks Roy

There was an article in either TB or Primitive Archer on this a few years ago. I made a few for fun after reading it. You don't need to taper the hole, just make it a snug fit over the shaft and leave the shaft untapered and glue like that. You also need a curved tine tip to start with. That way the soft, porous center of the antler doesn't form the point when you shape it. I really liked the way they look, but they turn out very light. Mine ended up around 50 gr. or so. But it would be simple to weight them with lead shot to match the weight you want. Now you've got me itching to make a few again
