Predator Control!

Pittsley Predator control, that is! Now that I have your attention, I have a tuning question.

I finally able to shoot my bows again, and I'm trying to get my Predator tuned up. I'm getting close, but I'm wondering what to make of the grouping in the following photo:

 

This group was shot from about 15 yds. With the bare shafts to the right of the fletched shafts, it indicates weak spine. I'm just wondering why the nock ends of the bare shafts are leaning right. Almost seems like this would mean a stiff spine. I would like to get perfect bare shaft flight, but I don't know which way to go now.

You know some times those bag targets will do some funny things after the arrows hit them like have the arrows shift angles after they hit the bag. Try using a foam target like a Block or one simmilar.

Bags are misleading with nocks. Go by how your arrows group. Move back to 20/25 and see if bare and fletched stay tight or spread more from each other. You'll get a much better idea from that. Looks pretty good at 15 so far.

Unless you are only going to be shooting shafts with no feathers, I would be most content at 15 yards. Now like Vermaster13 has recommended, back up to 20/25 and see how they look. If they still look the same, let me know what 3D tournaments you are going to so I can go a different direction.

Sorry but ya do not want perfect bareshaft flight! Ya want your bareshafts a tad weak as adding a broadhead will stiffen them slighty. Don't worry about anything and go hunt! Shawn

Might try raising the nock point up a hair. Spine looks pretty darn good.

it's not brain surgery. That is a great group! Don't over anal-ize it. it will start screwing with your head and your shooting could suffer.

Chuck, not trying to be controversial, but I follow Ken Beck's (Black Widow Bows) method for bareshaft tuning. He would say your bareshafts are a tad too stiff. To weaken them they need to be cut a little longer or the point weight increased. As someone else said, the bareshafts should be a little on the weak side when done to allow for the difference the broadhead makes.

My arrows are setup to use the PDP weight system, so I'm going to see what happens when I start adding a few extra grains up front.

Since I have a bit of time on my hands, I did some more tinkering. I was getting a little tail kick,   so I added 25 gns. using PDP weights per Shifting Shadow. I also nudged the nocking point up a 1/16". Here's a group shot from 20 yds.:

 

I'm getting great flight, which is making me more confident in my shooting.
