Thanks guys for the kind words. This really was a hunt for Gray as I had no intentions of taking a bear unless he had one first. My friend, John, that invited us up is an outdoor writer and he loves to take young hunters out and write articles about their hunt. John really wanted to see Gray do this with his longbow. Gray has taken a number of deer with black powder and lots of turkeys with shotgun. This was his first try at game other than groundhogs with his longbow. He had to start someplace and bear over bait is about as good as it gets for predictable targets except for the dusk and black target issue. In hindsight we did not practice for that variable. We did see about six different bears over the four days and he held off on several that did just not cooperate and give him the shot he wanted. I know he could have made the shot I made, but he was not comfortable and told me to take the bear. He did have one good oportunity opening day in good light and shot just over the bear. I think this caused him to lose some confidence. Until this point all he had ever seen of bears was one or two running across highway enroute north. A good deal was learned and as I told him I was at least 30 something befor I got my first bear and that was with a rifle. He has lots of years to get a bear and we are working on plans for an elavated stand on practice range so he can shoot at last light.
