A Little Pkg. From Bowdoc
« on: September 04, 2008, 09:55:00 AM »
I've seen several posts here and on another site asking about Don Ward's work and I always have good things to say about him but I haven't posted any pics, mainly because I use my bows pretty hard and they don't keep that "showroom" look forever. I had sent Don a couple of Super Kodiaks, a'69 and a '70, to clean up and modify for me and they came home this week. I wanted to show them to you before I banged'em up.  Grant

Here's a picture of the two of them in their natural habitat: These bows were rough, folks.   I wish my skills and equipment were up to the task of accurately displaying Donny's work. These risers were badly beat up and very bulky. After I cut the shelves down I sent them to BD and asked him to slenderize the risers and hgrips to match the takedowns he's done for me. Not many people I'd trust to do this and it was perfect.   Grant

Oops-I should have shrunk those down a bit- here are a couple more- The 1970 was actually kinda green from the yellowed finish-its distinctly gray now. The specs are 60" for each- the '69 is 65#@28 and the '70 is 68#@28. Thanks Bowdoc.                             Grant

Thanks Dean- I hope it works out that way. The old phenolic Bears can be a little fragile in the glue joints-I've blown a couple along the nose caps and they make me a little "flinchy." I bought this bow from the daughter of the original purchase and it had bee used hard. It had zero stress in the limbs however and I think it will hold up. Its the best shooter of the two but the '70 is tough as iron and pretty much bullet proof. The best thing about these bows is they weigh about half what my old styleI TD does, lol.                           Grant

FYI, I like the large photos. They make great Desktops!    :)   My very first bow was a black colored Super Kodiak that looked very similiar to the one in the large photo. It was, 60" 40# @ 28". If I remember, it had a blue line stripe in it. Great looking bow. I was a fool for selling it in 1978.   :banghead:

Oops-dbld. up. Night Wing, you had a keeper, the blue stripes were future wood like the '70 and very durable. I have a buddy that still hunts with one. Thanks for the comments but this is really a Bowdoc show-these things were beat up bad when he gottem.                Grant

The man's got real talent both as a refinisher and as an entertainer! A genuinely caring guy too-I am not surprised it shows in his bows.

Very nice, Grant!  I think I recognize those black arrows.

Thanks Rick-yeah, those arrows haven't done much since Quebec but season opens Saturday. The '70 is actually much heavier than marked (much) but the '69 is only about 66 or 67lbs. at my 29"and it will get the cold weather action for sure. Hope we can hunt together again soon, it was an honor. Have a great season....Grant
