Longbows for bowfishing?
« on: September 18, 2008, 10:05:00 AM »
I have had a time with shooting a solid fiberglass arrow from my longbows. They are 3/16" from center shot. I initially tried one of those graphite shafts and almost took my strike plate off! Way too stiff. I can hit what I'm aiming at with the fiberglass ones, but not getting straight flight. I bounced it off of several gators the other day. I finally stuck one pretty good, but had the barb pull out right away. I'm thinking a center shot bow would be a better choice. I know the center shot bow would shoot the shafts straighter for better penetration. Any thoughts, or experiences with longbows and bowfishing?

All bows used for bowfishing need to be bare shaft tuned to get the straightest flight possible and with most longbows, they are not cut to center.  I have had to shorten several fiberglass shafts to get them to spine properly off some heavier poundage recurves, but with most around the 50# range, they fly great full length.  Tune them just like you would for hunting and see what a bareshaft with no line attached flies like and adjust the length if they are excessively weak.  Good luck, Mark
Or just holler at me here at Muzzy and I will be glad to help, straight shaft flight is very critical with bowfishing arrows as it is with hunting shafts!
They'll be no quitters till we bag us some critters!
