Arrow tuning

My Hubby is bareshafting some carbon shafts and they are showung a little stiff; If  he builds the side plate out with a tooth pic or some leather will that make the shaft weaker?

No, that is to make a weak shaft shoot "stiffer"

You may also try increasing the brace height.A higher brace will allow you to shoot a little stiffer arrow.

I believe raising the brace height decreases the power stroke thus making a stiff shaft show even stiffer.I have raised the brace height on an arrow that shows alittle weak decreasing the power stroke,to make the arrow show stiffer.Like said you want a thinner side plate on a stiff arrow and you could try increasing point weight also.I you like the point weight,you can add weights behind the insert also.Would need more info,bow weight,draw length,what is your arrow set up now and what is it doing.

Raising the brace will decrease the power stroke and probably make the bow a little slower.It will however allow the bow to bareshaft tune better with a stiffer arrow.I suspect it has more to do with shifting the flex point on the shaft as it leaves the string than anything else.

If your bow shot a weaker shaft better after raising the brace,you may just have solved a shelf contact problem rather than a spine issue.Either way I'm glad it worked for you.

With respect to raising and lowering brace height and arrow spine; my experience has been the following:
Lowering brace will accomodate a stiffer shaft
Higher brace will accomodate a softer shaft
Not arguing or speculating on rationale, just sharing my results.
Country girl do your own testing-it is not at all difficult.

I think the easiest way to weaken a shaft is to add some more weight up front. If he's shooting a say 125 grain field tip try a 145 or a 175 couldn't hurt.
