I'm a believer
« on: October 07, 2008, 07:07:00 AM »
After reading all the threads on ghillies, I broke down and bought one from cheaperthandirt.com.  My wife thinks I look ridiculous in it, but I gave it a try by sitting in a soy bean field where I knew some does would be feeding.  I was just sitting on a stool along the edge of the field - completely in the open.  I fell asleep while sitting there (sigh...), and when I came to I must have moved, because a doe blew and ran off - she had been feeding just a few yards away and had not seen me.   A little later I watched a doe walk out of the brush and peruse the field, trying to decide whether it was safe to come out.  She looked right at me and never showed the slightest alarm.  Although she fed away from me and never offered me a shot, it was obvious she thought I was a bush.

I'm a believer!  This ghillie is definitely a fun way to hunt from the ground.

I know they work, because they certainly fooled me when I was in the Army; however, I'm just too afraid someone will catch me wearing one.

I am concerned that all the shaggy stuff hanging down will interfere with my bowstring.

The thought of hiding in plain sight is cool.

I had to do a lot of trimming off the left arm and chest area to keep it out of the string.  Other than that, the only real downside for me has been the heat.  This is a light weight suit, but it's been 60+ where I'm hunting and it was a bit toasty.

I've killed mature bucks from the ground wearing mine (rancho safari).. Could not be more pleased. You really are invisible set up correctly.

Good Hunting,

Made and wore a few in the Corps.  They do work great, but not for me.

The one I use has short sleeves on it. I wear a matching camo shirt under the ghillie jacket and things are fine. I haven't had to trim anything off of the chest area on mine.

get stepped on by a man intent on finding you in your scout/sniper course and have him keep walking and you'll be sold on a ghillie for life.

I got one last year but didn't use it much. I'm using it quite a bit this year. In Illinois it really impressed me. Not much chance to try it out here. I wear it but don't have deer come by in the day light.

I mulled over the practicality issues (I know they work), and decided to only buy a boonie/hood this year, because I feel my head outline is my main giveaway.  So far I've had 6 different deer 6-15 yds. from me on the ground, with only a large walnut tree behind me, no major cover screening my front.  I'm sold!  Some of those deer knew I was out of place, but after some hard looks, they decided I wasn't enough of a threat to leave.  Oh yeah, this was on public hunting grounds too.

I ordered one from  "C T D" , just in time ,now they are not taking orders for that one.  To many back orders.  Mine is to be shiped on 23rd. I have wanted one for a some time.

The ghillie suit has opened up a whole new world of hunting for me. There's nothing like it! I may never climb another tree.
