stringwalking - the orther traditional hunting style

heee heee it is that time of year again.  hunting with a stringwalking style is sure not for all tradtional hunters but it is sure nuff trad and sure nuff deadly.  what ya start with is a trad recurve of medium to long in lenght (64 to 66 inches)

put a nock point on just a bit on the high side.  I like a spring rest but most of the flipper rest will do great.  what we are gonna do is put a "crawl" mark on our serving.  this is a rised dental floss under our arrow nocking point.  the one pictured is 1&3/8" under the NP.  that is where I draw the arrow and loose the arrow.  I can now use the point of the as a sight.  I use a index finger/conner of the mouth anchor.  this is my 15yd "crawl"  From the crawl I used the point to aim under or over for distance.

The raised "crawl mark" lets me put my tab on the string a run up the serving till it stops at the crawl mark.  don't have to move my head or look at the string.

I always kinda thought of two styles of shooting, split finger and 3 under.  Guess there's a third, 3 WAY under eh?

Mark - I make fun of the glasses cause I look so dumb in them but they have a very speific function.  they let you line up the center of your lens with the line the arrow is on.  thus there is no paralex.  when ya start getting okder (shut up Wannabe    ) looking thru the edge of your glass will cause the targe to ghost, wave and float.  Make very accurate shooting impossible.  the len is turned in the glass so cylinder is looking over your nose just where you ae aiming the arrow.

Wannabe. I am aiming the point directly at the spot just like a big dog on at fire plug.  if ya keep good back tension, don't over aim, follow thru with your dow hand......the arrow is there (well most of the time. I have been know to give up a draw now and then   )

Good stuff, Rusty!  I haven't quite perfected the art of string walking yet, but I have put sights on a couple of my recurves and have been doing some shooting.  It does require some practice, but when the form is on, so is the shot!  No wonder so many of the earlier recurves were tapped for sights...they're down right deadly (and traditional)!!!

Chris - the glass are manufactored in Germany by Knobloch. the left lens has my bifocal RX in it.  the right lens (aiming eye) is actual a smaller size lens with just my far correction.  the size of the lens focuses your eye into the center of the lens each time,  thus takes care of two of archery;s 32 T's head turn and head tilt.  there is anothere set manufacture by Champion.  they have a pair specfucally designed for archery.   www.champion-brillen.ch

In general shooting you don't shoot from a mark crawl mark but you move your crawl up and down the serving to the exact distance you are shooting.  of course string walking is only good till ya get to point on.  alas that is all a diferent story.  we are concentrating on putting meat in the freezer

I use a tab made by a hot shot compound string waker tha has a turck load of world and national championships (David Hughes).  you can count the stitches from you nocking point and keep the count to the distance in your mind.

the Black Widow tab also has stitching in the right place to count.  The stringwalking style make for a heck of a squirrel and turkey hunting style

I shot field competition with stringwalkers back in the 60's and 70's though I didn't string walk at the time. I started stringwaling hunting about 20 yrs ago when I had a tom turkey fly off with my arrow not to be recovered.  I decided at that moment I would never miss a wingnut again and started to learn to stringwalk from the few that were left around.
