Tanning Frozen Hides?
« on: March 02, 2007, 12:27:00 AM »
I have some buddies who are going to be gracious enough to give me their deer hides next season, and I would like to brain tan them....trouble is, I may not be able to get to them right away...

Is it still possible to tan them later, if I freeze them right after they come off the deer? Anyone done this? Any drawbacks or change in quality of the finished product? Thanx...John

I had a couple in the bottom of my freezer for two or three years that were in a plastic garbage bag.  Last spring I took them out and sent them into a tannery and they came back looking great with the hair on.  Although its not Brain tanning I would'nt think it would be any different...but who knows?

John, I do that every year, just freeze them until your ready with no ill effects. I work graveyard shift, and my time with my family is more important than my fun time so freeze them and don't worry about it.

They are very hard to work when frozen.  I recommend you thaw them out.  Glad I could help.
