100% TRAD SETUP..... POST PICS OF YOURS..
« on: October 19, 2008, 06:26:00 PM »
Ok say you wanted to hunt 100% trad sometimes maybe not all the time but for fun ive been kicking it around. The whole nine yards....flint points(is that even legal in Alabama),homemade shafts, all wood bow. What was the string made of ...sinew?
Post pics of your 100% trad setup.
Can someone give me some insight on this?

Beyond trad, primitive.

I think you are luckily enough in one of very few states that allow that.

If I remember correctly you can even atlatl hunt in alabama.

A guy down in ELberta Al(Baldwin Co) hunts with a cold steel spear. He has a book out but I don't know the name of it right now.
I have made and hunted with osage selfbows and even tried once to make a point.I lost a lot of blood on that deal. i enjoy shooting osage bows but spinning my own shafts and sinew feathers sounds cool but I really like fletch tape.

Ian are you sure? I thought I saw you had to use a steel head with two cutting blades and a certain width?

is that just for deer?

My set up this year is a 60" osage static recurve self bow with cherry bark backing that bends through the handle(47#@26"), a 64" yew selfbow that bends through the handle(46#@26"), hill cane arrows with stone points(obsidian and Texas chert) and a modified 2 fletch with turkey feathers. Points are hafted with pitch glue and sinew wrap and the feathers are tied with sinew and sinew wrapped self nocks. All sinew is sealed with homemade pitch varnish.
I can e-mail pics to you if you would like. I don't have photobucket.   Pat

Self nocks are cut directly into the shaft instead of added on to it. Generally they should be reinforced with a wrap set in glue or a spine of wood, bone, ivory or rawhide inserted perpendicular to the nock. Pat

One of the things the indians used to make strings was groundhog hide. Neat process to make. Can't remember where I watched the video but they would heat it in ashes of hardwood(to take the fur off) and take a hatchett and slice it until they had strips. They would then braid the strips together. Never tried it but looks neat.

The string is dacron and it is bamboo backed which I don't consider 100% primitive otherwise, the arrows and quiver ARE 100% primitive.
