I am trying to put a Colorado Elk hunt together for the 2009 season. Anyone know of any good public land?

I am all ears on this one!
Hoping for the same thing, I was going to start my search in the Gunnison area.

Colorado has a huge amount of public land, but it is not all equal when it comes to elk hunting.
What kind of hunt are you looking to do? Guided, truck camp, drop camp, backpacking? Getting away from other hunting pressure and ATV use will be a major key to your ability to find elk.

I am looking for any of those however I would like to hunt with no guide. Not that there is anything wrong with guided hunting! Any good flatland public hunting also?

Look to the over the counter areas in the White River national Forest. You'll have company but there are elk. You won't find it easy. There isn't much flatland elk hunting on public ground.

BrokenArrow1 did you click on the link that JDICE provided? You can also get a DeLomore atlas map of Colorado. They are a great asset to me I have one for every state I hunt in. Not great detail as for as topo but it will get you where you want to be. Next I would get a topo of the area you find most attractive. Have fun on your wextern journey.

Once you know which GMU you want to hunt - you can get detailed topo maps, with or without Elk concentration overlays, at Colorado Wildlife:

I can tell you where not to go. Unit 7 which is also 8,9,19,and 191. Big waste of time Low concentrations of elk. was much better in previous years but has gotten really pressured and the elk numbers have gone down.
