bowyer in MT needs wood help
« on: October 22, 2008, 12:14:00 AM »
We just moved from TN to Montana. I already have several men in our town who want me to teach them how to make a trad bow.  However, I no longer have access to my favorite woods, especially hickory.  We are located on the Yellowstone river and the dominate wood here is Cottonwood.  Is there anyone here from MT or is familiar with the native woods in this area?  Which ones are good for making bows?  I dont want to have to buy any and have it shipped if at all possible.

Birch and Yew but you will probably have to go over near Idaho to find it. Other than that I am not sure.

where are you in montana?

There are some pockets of yew on the far west side.

I'm sure you have some ash trees around you if you live on the yellowstone.

welcome to montana!!
