This morning I went on a short hunt on a ridge about a mile from my house, ridge is about 2 miles long by 1/2 mile wide, runs out into lake Cumberland. There are about 7 houses on this, surrounded by hardwoods, I am only hunter allowed to hunt around these houses. These are mostly weekend cabins, and due to the drought this year, deer have ruined all the shrubbery/ flowers at these houses and the owners have asked me to help thin the herd. Well was over there hunting, set up on a balcony with a shrub growing up beside it, with a folding chair. Had 3 deer at about 40 yds, working towards me, when the wind shifted, they got my scent and ran back up into the woods blowing, stomping. I thought that was that, when I looked up and about 20 yards below where the deer ran into the woods, here came 5 turkey hens running out across the yard and turned back to look at the deer to see what the ruckus was about. The closest one was about 22yds, inside my comfort Zone. I concentrated ton the spot between her sholders as her back was facing me, anchored and pulled my #48 Tradtech Pinnaclle longbow to Anchor and as I pulled on through watched those big Lime colored fletches stop about 2 inches from her back, I heard a pufft/chink as the broadhead hit a rock in the ground. The woodsmand head cut her spine into and she flopped over the hill about 35yds to the edge of the woods and under a bush. I gave her about 10 minutes and retrieved her. I am stoked, this is my first ever archery Turkey, and it being trad is so wonderful.Since going trad, hunting harder, practicing harder every success is so much sweeter. Some of my buddies had been laughing at me hunting on the porches and balcony of these houses, but I told them I was using the cover and terrain available witout disturbing anything. Well just wanted to share this with you all, this seems like the year for first timers in so many ways, got to head to work.
