Looks like skwerls for dinner.
« on: October 24, 2008, 06:48:00 PM »
Another nice cold morning and I just can't stand sitting home. After dropping off Gwyn at school, Greta and I headed out for a walk with the bow. Seemed like plenty of squirrels around and that's better then stumpin'. Went 4 for 6 on the little furry things, so looks like I'll be making a stew.  Think I'll try the crock pot.  BTW, never had such great luck and good shooting as today. It was a great confidence builder and I'll be feeling good in the deer blind tomorrow.
I will give thanks to the LORD because of his righteousness and will sing praise to the name of the LORD Most High.

Okay all you squirrel experts - I need some help!  I have a pretty big back yard, with oak trees and squirrels running around in them, that occasionally run across the ground and make targets of themselves.  Well, the other day, I connected with one, and was going to try cooking it.  Only, I didn't get that far.  I had watched the Trad Gang video that has a section on skinning squirrels, and the guy makes it look about as easy as taking off a sock.  So I tried that method, which is to cut through the tail bone and cut a flap up the back, step on the flap, and zip the ol' hide on off.  Only, the squirrel almost ripped in two at the point where my arrow had gone through it, and things went from bad to worse from that point on.  Suffice it to say that by the time I gave up, I didn't have anything that looked worth eating, to say the least.  Any advice for the next time?

Great shooting Jerry! I've been trying but all I get for my effort is some squirrel fur on my judos. Do you have a recipe for squirrel fur? LOL
