Favorite wood for wood arrows?
« on: October 26, 2008, 07:30:00 PM »
Just started shooting tapered cedars out of my Mohawk this season. Man I really like the way they fly out of  it and my other Longbows too. What wood arrows are you shooting out of your bows? Is there a better wood arrow than cedar in your opinion? Thanks bentpole

Birch & ash is what I'm using. Both give more weight.

I like cedars.  Use them for 90% of my shooting and hunting.  I buy the heaviest weight cedars I can find in my spine range and make them heavier by soaking them in Watco oil.  Sometimes I also foot them.  When I want a really heavy arrow though, I go to hickory, birch or ash in that order.

My favorite is Douglas Fir. Fairly heavy, tough, and the grain really "sticks out" when stained, making for a great looking arrow.

Cedar and Tamarack but there is nothing better than a quality cedar arrow. dino

I also like Doug Fir. Tough, straight, not too heavy and looks good.
The size of the horns don,t matter

I have tried sitka and cedar. I like the sitka better.

I am building a set of douglas fir arrows to see how they work with my set up, and still want to try out other woods

What about oak?  Would that make a good arrow?

Last time I used oak, I was constantly straightening it. Drove me nuts. But, it did make a very tough shaft. Really heavy, too...
