need your input on arrow selection
« on: October 27, 2008, 12:56:00 AM »
I have been shooting a 62" longbow 48lbs @28 inch. I want to use carbon arrows either gold tip 35/55 or carbon express heritages 150. Is this a good starting point? I have read alot of posts here on shooting carbon arrows, what would you guys recommend for tip weights, insert weights, and etc. Any help would be much appreciated since I'm a newbie to traditional archery thanks

it's difficult to answer your question because all the variables you mention will vary from bow to bow, even with the same draw weight.  finding the right arrow length, weight, tip weight combination for my bow took me about a month. if you don't have an arrow saw, i would start with CE 250's with a 75 grain brass inserts and 145 grain tips.  adjust tip weight - up or down - until your arrow flight is good.  that would be a reasonable starting point.  without an arrow saw you can only adjust point/insert weight, and it's better to start off with a stiffer arrow - 250 vs. 150 - in my opinion.  i personally use CE heritage 350's with a 75 grain insert and a 175 grain point for a 60lb. bow.

i forgot to mention, it might help to buy a couple trad archery books. "traditional archery" by sam fadala has a lot of useful info - especially dealing with arrow selection & tuning.  and keep reading this forum and use the search function, your question has been asked many times before - and has been answered by people alot smarter than me.

I shoot a 62" Tomahawk longbow that's 45# @ 28". my draw length is 27 3/4". I shoot Gold Tip Ultralight Entrada 600 @ 28 1/2" with 100 grain inserts and 125 grain heads, standard 3 fletch of 5" feathers for a total weight of 430 grains. They shoot great for me and still allow me to have a higher FOC. the best price for shafts I've found is Eagle Archery @ $4.25 per shaft. You could order a few to try for not much money and if they don't work I'll take them off your hands.

Is the bow cut past center? Hybrid, mild R/D or straight D? How far are you actually drawing?

Well I just purchased a arrow saw, 100 grain brass inserts, 5 inch feathers, and 145 grain field points. I already have 100 grain and 125 grain field points. The bow I'm shooting is a 3 piece lewis hollow long bow its a demo bow, just ordered one so he told me to shoot it awhile until he needs it back. he told me the 35/55 with a little weight up front shoot great.

100 grain inserts and the 145 points might be right on the money. I wouldn't cut until trying all of the above combinations with the 100 grain inserts..

Draw lenght is very important when picking arrow spine.I draw about 29 and shoot a 52lb Shawnee my arrows are CX250 cut at 30 1/2 with a 175 tip. That's all the weight that I can put upfront.Would have to go to a 350 if I want a EFOC arrow.Other people shoot alot differant set- ups but this is what works with me.

Well I shoot the full length gold tip 35/55 with 5" feathers and 100 grain brass insert and 100-145 grain field points. And I was getting a really bad paper tear to the bottom right of the entrance hole. I'm a little confused is it too stiff and do I need to move my nocking point. Should I try just a regular insert instead of the brass insert? Need help

If your bow is center cut you won't need 100 gr inserts unless you plan on cutting those arrows short, I was shooting GT3555 full length with a 50gr brass insert and 125 gr point, out of a 48# Hill so they had to be fairly weak.
