Period Arrow Gift Received
« on: October 29, 2008, 06:07:00 PM »
Thought y'all might enjoy seeing this, even though it's hunting season (I'm not seeing any Deer yet but I have a good chance coming up tomorrow evening.)

Paul Napthine of Canada made a special (what I would call) English Period Arrow Replica, with bodkin point and sent it to me. I really appreciate this generous hand-crafted gift, and it is now in a place of honor on a rack with other special arrows that I have. The arrow is about 32" BOP, weighs 622 gr, and I hope you can see some of it's other special featurs in the following pic. It has 7" hand cut fletchings wrapped on with what looks to be some kind of hemp cord, an extra long, spliced, self nock of some very dark wood (about 2" lg), and the shaft is special also. Not sure what type of wood it is but it looks like it could be some kind of fir, or cedar, (perhaps even yew) because there appears to be two colors of grain running through it. It also could be a (very fine) hand-planed shaft, unless I am just feeling the grain. These are just the things I noticed about this fine piece upon enjoying it's receipt yesterday. Thank you so much, Paul, for this very noteworthy gift.

That's a handsome bit of lethality there!

Thanks Serge, pops, and Killie.

No dobt in my mind it would most likly be very functional indeed. I will probably shoot it at least a couple times (all arrows should be shot at least once - IMO) just to be familiar with, or aware of, it's capabilities. Bet I'll have to pick a spot a little higher than normal though, at it's weight - LOL. Not sure about it's spine but if you measure it the same way (not sure if I still use 24" on the base of my spine tester, or set it longer for the longer shaft) it is up around 100, even though it seems nice and flexible. It'll be interesting to see how it shoots. I went out and checked my shooting tonight, in prep for tomorrow night with Don Batten - (did fine except for one shot - I hope that isn't the one I get to take - LOL) but forgot to take this arrow out. Maybe tomorrow, before noon.

Nice "English" arrow Bernie. It can keep the snaky arrow company...after you shoot it, of course.     Pat

Thank you, Chris and VTm, very much.

Paul provided this additional info:

Bernie, you were right the shaft is hand planed and then sanded, the wood is pine and the nock insert is mahogany. I used linen for the wrapping on the fletching, I would have liked to use a real bodkin point but they are too expensive by the time I get them shipped so the one on the arrow is from 3rivers. The pine was a great find in the odds and ends bin at a building supply store where they cut and dress their own wood. I managed to get 10 shafts from it.
