Took my daughter hunting
« on: October 30, 2008, 03:05:00 PM »
I found a great spot last weekend on the land that I hunt to put a stand, a perfect funnel with some locust and oak trees dropping, put up a quick stand and planed to return Monday nite. Monday evening I was getting ready to leave and my 10 year old says "Daddy if I hurry and finish my homework can I come with you ?", no way can we both fit in the stand I just put up. I thought about it for about a 10th of a second and said" sure baby I'll wait for you" the only place we could hunt together was a double stand put up by the landowner that I had zero confidance in as far as seeing something but we will get to spend time together. We get ready, she grabs her bow , a Leon Stewart longbow, just in case she sees a rabbit. I think we got in the stand about 4:30 or so, much later than I like but we are having fun. About 5:30 we hear the telltale sound of a whitetail headed our way so I get ready and out steps a small whitetail, he is smaller than I would like but this is a special occasion and he stops to feed about 15 yds and turns 1/4 away. The arrow went through him so quick he never new what it was, he just took about 10 steps and stood there the slowly walked back into the woods where he came from. My daughter asked " did you hit him ?"  "Oh yea baby I hit him" . shortly after we heard a crash in the woods and a short time after that a couple more deer came out to feed, and we were able to watch them until dark. We got down to work out the blood trail and my daughter took the lead spotiing blood and marking the trail. Long story short it did'nt take long to find the deer and we gutted it and were home for supper and bedtime on a school nite. It was'nt the hunt I had planned but better ! I would'nt take this deer for a P&Y trophy. Here are a couple of pictures.

It seems to me to be kinda funny, but when I have the kid with me, I all ways see deer. My son is 13, and he has shot 4 all ready. He shot one the first time he hunted right after he passed the hunter safety course. I can't wait until he can shoot the 40lbs necessary to hunt deer in Oklahoma. Congrats on your deer and having the opportunity to enjoy the time outdoors with your daughter. Perhaps kids are just deer magnets when they can stay quiet and still!

Thanks Y'all, this is a great place to be able to share a story like this. Here is another picture of a deer I shot week before last and had some help on the bloodtrail, the rewards are great when you get your kids envolved.
