can you serve the loops on a flemish string?
« on: November 02, 2008, 12:00:00 PM »
Has anyone served the loops on a flemish twist string to prevent premature wear? I have not checked the grooves for any rough edges or burrs which I know will be the first suggestion but I thought I'd ask. Skippy

Skippy:
I think you answered your own question. Flemish twist strings are more than enough resistant to wear, without serving. The problem lies else where.

I imagine you could rig something up, but it would be a royal pain.  I agree that, if you are getting unusual/premature wear, the problem is most likely in the bow, not the string.

I did it already, and a pain to do it was.  I thought it quieted the string slap down for me, but others may say not.  I will not do it again.  good luck....

I've done it on really short strings for my kids longbows, becuase I didn't have as many twists at the loop ends my strings would seem to loosen up a bit when the string was off, so I'd serve an inch to keep it together.  Didn't need a serving tool, just did it my hand with a length of B50.

I have used yarn to serve the loops and add to the quietness on a recurve I was having problems with.
