The reason the Fred Bear style hats are still popular is because they work well. The brim is wide enough to shade your eyes from the sun, even when it is at the sides, yet soft enough to bend when you draw.
The only problem I have is it can get too darn cold here in Iowa to wear that type of hat.
BTW: Matty, I found an Original Jones style hat made of fleece. I wear it when the weather won't allow my felt hat. Got it at Mills Fleet Farm, but I don't think you have them in CO. I'll check the brand and maybe you can find one.
