ahhhh the thrill of the hunt

i'm still amazed at the crazy things deer can do just as you figure out that you WITHOUT A DOUBT have his number! i was in a stand today and was pretty positive that i would get a shot at a buch. they had been using this trail hot and heavy the last 3 hunts. i stayed away for 1 day while it rained and i let my scent vanish a little bit. the trail leads right past my stand, 10 yards tops. i have practiced shooting out of this stand from sitting and standing positions. i was CONFIDENT. at 9:30 i look up to see what i thought was a big racked buck briskly walking down the trail i was watching. when he turned his head straight on i could see that it was an unusally hig 4 point with dark brown antlers. big body though and making his way down the trail, head down on a mission! watched him come from 100 yards and when he got down to 20 i knew that i would have to mouth bleat to make him stop, no problem i have done that many times. you couldn't ask for a better situation as it was coming together just as planned and as i had practiced for. at 5 yards just before he passed me tree he turned hard right and jumped the creek behind me never braking pace or stride, what the @#%&!!!!!

You just may want to give that buck a free pass next time he shows up and be easy on yourselves. :D

That's the kind of experience that makes me love hunting and being in the woods.
Thanks for sharing it with us.

Slip one between his ribs next time and see if he is still Lucky after that! Hopefully he will breed a few does before that and leave some offspring to keep you entertained in the future.

To me, the ultimate challenge in bowhunting is not how far away you can succesfully make a killing shot but rather how close you can get to the animal before shooting.

ahhhh, the thrill of the hunt!
Wherever the whitetail roams, this drama is played
out countless times. There is something really special in the "Thrill of the hunt".
Maybe it was his sixth sense saving him again at the last instant. He could FEEL your eyes on him.
You know...the same feeling people describe when a cougar is watching them.
Happy hunting Ken.

This Buck is a 4 point that has been eating alot of 4 leaf clovers. Ken would have had a slam dunk shot at this Buck but he decided to take a right hand turn just before he would have presented the perfect shot opportunity. The Buck headed straight towards me like he was on a string. He was moving at a brisk pace so I had to mouth bleat to stop him. I never seen the 2 small branches that were in line with the spot that I picked to shoot at. The rest is history. I enjoyed this hunt as much as if I would have harvested this deer. After I found my arrow to make sure that it was a clean miss I was happy that I missed this deer as I thought that this was the same deer that Ken has seen and been hunting for a few days now. I now know that this wasn't "Picnic" but a different Buck named "Lucky". Ken - Bring one of these guys home on Saturday!
