Inquiry re: Ye Sylvan Archer (Legends of the Longbow Series)
« on: November 08, 2008, 08:56:00 PM »
G'day,

I was wondering if someone could give me a bit of an overview of what this book contains? Specifically, I have these questions:

- Is it just one volume containing all the Ye Sylvan Archer magazines?

- Are there articles by Pope and Young?

- Are there pictures and photos?

- What time period is represented?

I'm really enjoying hunting down some of the less well-known bowhunting history books. I've just received Putnam's "David Goes to Greenland", and have just ordered White's "Lions in the Path."

Thank you,

Ben

Okay, I've done a little more research, and have discovered there are many, many volumes, so my question is probably too simplistic in some respects.

If Pope and Young had articles in these, does anyone know which volumes I might find stories of lions and Polar bears in?

Thanks,

Ben

Ben,
Pope was already dead when YSA was first published. I don't recall any article of Young right now, possible there was something.
I do have all volumes, as reprinted in the St.Charles "Legend of the Longow" series (see below how they devide). Thousands of pages to read - on all aspects of archery. Yes, there are pics, of course. Not always the best quality though.

Ye Sylvan Archer. – Facsimile 1993 in DAVIS, J.E. (Ed.): Legends of the Longbow (Derrydale Press).
Vol I: Ye Sylvan Archer May 1927 – Dec. 1929
Vol II: Ye Sylvan Archer Jan. 1930 – Dec. 1931
Vol III: Ye Sylvan Archer Jan. 1932 – Oct. 1933

Ye Sylvan Archer. – Facsimile 1994 in DAVIS, J.E. (Ed.): Legends of the Longbow (Derrydale Press).
Vol IV: Ye Sylvan Archer Dec. 1935 – Dec. 1937
Vol V: Ye Sylvan Archer Jan. 1938 – Dec. 1939
Vol VI: Ye Sylvan Archer Jan. 1940 – Dec. 1941
Vol VII: Ye Sylvan Archer Jan. 1942 – Dec. 1943

Thanks, Falk! Mate, if you could have a look and let me know which ones Art might've written for, I'd be most grateful! Cheers, Ben

Ben,
there is no index to the authors for all the many YSA volumes. I've read them all, but it's just to much to remember everything. So what you are asking is, me flapping to all the pages   :readit:    :help:   I can do that for you, but it will need some time - okay?

But, an other thing I did right now! I looked into my copy of Lake & Wright for all listed Art Youngs publications. You asked about Lions and Bear stories - here is what I have found:

Young,A. (1926): African lions and the longbow. -
 Field & Stream, July 1926, 11-13, 86-7
 Field & Stream, Aug. 1926, 24-6
 Field & Stream, Sept. 1926, 22-3, 98-100

Young,A. (1926): Loaded for bear - Big game hunting with the bow and arrow. - Collier's, 78, 11 Sept. 1926, 32, 39.
______________________________________________
BTW: have you read
WHITE, Stewart Edward (1926): Lions in the Path. – 292 p., 35 figs.; Garden City, New York (Doubleday, Page & Co.).

It covers the 1925 Pope & Young African adventure from the PH's point of view. There are reprints available, for example this one:
WHITE, S.E. (1987): Lions in the Path. – 292 p., 35 figs.; Prescott, Arizona (Wolfe Publishing Co.).

Ben, how does this Monday feel? There are still some minutes of yesterday left in my place ...

Thanks, Falk!

Monday's going well! The students are behaving and good learning has been happening!

Thanks for the Field and Stream tips, too. I have a copy of Lions in the Path on the way.

Cheers,

Ben

A couple more questions, Falk:

What is "Lake & Wright"?

and

By "Collier's", does that refer to Collier's Encyclopaedia?

Thanks again,

Ben

Good evening! Well, now I know about this Monday myself  ;)

Before hitting the bed last night I went through all YSA up to 1936 for you. There is no article of Art Young - sorry!
However, there is lot's of interesting other stuff and once again I recognized, that almost everything was already covered by the old timers
---------

Q: Lake & Wright
Everything on Archery ever published (up to 1972, and found by the authors) is listed herein - be it a monography, periodical or movie. This is THE reference for the bookworm! Also available in the Legends of the Longbow Series!
LAKE, F.H. & WRIGHT, H.F. (1974): A Bibliography of Archery. – 501 p.; Lim. Ed. 1994, Legends of the Longbow Series; Lyon, Mississippi (Derrydale Press).

Q: Collier's
This is what Lake & Wright say about this periodical:
Colliers. The national weekly. New York; Springfield, Ohio, etc. 1-139, no.1, 28 Apr. 1888 - 4 Jan. 1957.

Good luck in finding this one!

Cheers,
Falk

Thanks so much for your efforts, Falk!

Yep, Monday's a done-dinner, here!

I wonder how a fellow goes about tracking down old magazines...

Cheers,

Ben

Ben,
I can't help with the magazin, sorry. Any good  sorted catalog at the nearest university bibliography, should be able to come up with it though - at least in theory. They should be able to arrange a "long distance loan" (dont know how you call it) too - or get you xerox copies through mail.

But maybe "Liquid Amber" can help you with this one? I think he is into magazine collecting?! Try to send him a PM.

Here is a pic for you - showing all volumes of YSA - in comparison with a Ribtek 190W - choosen only for you  :D

Besides your obvious focus on Pope & Young, I suppose you would not be dissapointed with the reading. If you ever get the chance to buy these, go for it. Note, there are lots of small paper chips sticking out here. All remarks I put there for a reason or an other. Otherwise the pages are guilded (spelling) - which is hardly seen here.

Glad I was able to help a little! It was my pleasure - I love this stuff!

They are fine books indeed. I am the proud and happy owner of "Sagittarius" and "The Adventurous Bowmen" from the series. Next year I'll look into nabbing a few more of them, with YSA being on top of the list.

Those Ribteks sure love feral billy goats!

I'll look-up Liquid Amber.

Cheers,

Ben

Not sure how this will come out, but here is a bibliography of Young I've put together over the years.  "Orig." means I have the original article; "copy" means I have a copy of the article.

If you want to read about his polar bear, and it is bear not 2 bears as P&Y has listed, the three books on the Greenland Expedition is where that information is located.

Several articles have been credited to Young that don't provide an author.  I and others have studied the articles and compared to Young's style and most have been discounted as penned by Young.  The Popular Mechanics articles are an example.  I still list them but note our opinions on Young as author.

It's still on the way here, Al. But I'll be sure to let you know what it's like. Putnam's book arrived Friday arvo, and I had it finished by Sunday arvo. It's a kids' book, written by a kid, and is very easy to get through. It has excellent photographs of Art Young, including him and the walrus he shot (albeit finished with rifle) and the Polar bear he shot. There is no mention of a second Polar bear, which would've had to have been taken on that same trip. It is an eye-opener as to the general toughness of people back then, and is best read with a little philosophical / historical understanding and leniency.

Thanks for the extra information, Liquid Amber! How does a fellow go about digging-up those magazines, or copies of the relevant articles? Also, how do the other two Greenland books compare to Putnam's in terms of coverage of Art's bowhunting adventures and photographs of him with his archery tackle and game?

Cheers,

Ben
