latest knapped point
« on: November 09, 2008, 07:55:00 PM »
Wanted to share this. It's my 1st point that I really like. Been trying to learn how to knap for a while and I think I'm finally getting the hang of it.

It was 1/4" plate glass. I think the notches need to be a little deeper but I'm afraid I might break it.

Very nice point. Plate glass is excellent for learning to pressure flake. It is cheap(free) and readily available in the dumpster behind the glass company.    Pat

Looks great!  You going to hunt with it this year?

(Remember to make it single bevel or else it won't kill anything! Haha!)

Gee you think? lol. jk. really nice point. I found a broken piece of plate glass pre shaped perfectly for a point. I'm going to give it a shot. Wish me luck.

I used an ishi stick and a small pressure flaker. Both are made of delrin with a copper nail in the end. I'm not sure if glass is strong enough for deer sized animals. Pretty brittle.  Once I learned how drive my flakes half way across the piece it became easier. Thanks for the compliments guys.

Glass is strong enough for hunting points for deer. Obsidian is volcanic glass and is quite brittle but makes good points. The good thing about lithic points is if you break one in a deer the broken edge is sharper than the original point.    Pat

Haven't weighed it yet. I think its a little big for an arrow. I'll try to scale the next one down.

Very nice glass point.Your notches look fine to me. Maybe worry about getting them deeper on future points but in the meantime give yourself a pat on the back for making such a fine point.

I find it very difficult to knap clear glass.Mostly because of seeing the flaking scars on the opposite side.

Yeah colored glass is easier. I use the grinding stone to highlight my ridges and platforms.
