most exiciting hunt in the first 65 yrs :
« on: November 16, 2008, 05:47:00 PM »
both my most exciting days hunting came when I was hunting with Wingnut.  The first one was a shot at a nice black bear.  it was stalk to good trad range.  I shot under him but as a trophy I got 5 black bear hairs shaved off just under hsi heart.   :)

Most exiciting was this morning about 7:30.  A little back ground.  I like to hunt with metal riser take-down.  they are genenrally long, heavy, and hard to get thru thick stuff. Add that to the fact that I stringwalk (direct aiming scheme with the point of an arrow) it makes shooting most lightweight trad recurves a little probalmatic.  I talked to wingnut and jason (dryad bows) about wanting a light physical weight  60" recurve in the mid 40# draw th a super strong riser (to hold together while stress the bow with a goofy draw. Mike and Jason put their heads together and got a bow in the rough sanded stage for me to try while we were hunting this weekend at Centerville.

The 17" riser  had extra glass lams for strength.   Limbs were static recurves.  I was testing the bow at 20 yds to set my crawl.  I shot 2 "sight adjusting shoots" and it was shooting very near my FITA bow crawls.  the frist shot I fired for effect was almost in the exact center of a 2x2 inch piece of duct tape at 20 yds.....hmmmm that will do just fine.

continueing....

Friday night I was hunting a stand 200yds west of Jason's stand.  Just as there was no light rays left on the ground from the sun set, I had a dandy boar came pig trotting 25 yds out.  The only shot I had was head on. No shot.  As he crossed broad side there were trees and bush cover him.  Dangit.....

I just settled and heart rate down....oh my gosh the whole dang herd is coming.  Big sow lead the sounder with 13 pigs and piglets following.  All at a good pig trot.  I was shooting a sight on my metal riser bow.  I put the pig heart in the center lead her two pig length and dropped the string.  I thought I was just in front of her but lost the arrow in the low light.

I got out of the stand to find the arrow just as Jason was coming up.  He asked if I saw the pigs    :)   .  We found my arrow and it was clean.  Miss dangit.

We know about where they came from and exactly where they were going......have to weight till tomorrow.

during the night the temp drop at lot and the wind was howling.  I was ready to chase the pigs but less than really really motivated becuase of the 30 degree temp and the 30 mph wind.  was gonna make a tree stand burtal in my opinion  :)

So I deside to take the Dryad test bow out and still hunt keeping out of the trees and out of some of the wind.  I had been shooting the bow more in camp and was nailing what I shot at.  I had to use Wingnuts arrows as mine had vans and a a lighter spine.  LOL what are friends for.  I just use his 20+ dollar an arrow hunting.

I wasn't able to find the pigs Saturday and really my heart wasn't in it.  Did got some good scouting done and had a couple of close encounters with deer.

Sunday came in cold but the wind had laid.  My attitudes was in high gear and ready for pigs.  I went to the area I thought the pigs were feeding in.  Skirted way around the area to get the wind in my favor.  Got into the area without disturbing the game.  I was setting of a log behind to yopon and had 5 doe pass in front of me about 12 yds out but yopon between us stopped me from getting a shot.  Heart settled back down and I was hearing leaves being shuffled.  Not eactly walking more like an amradillo rooting in teh leaves.  I start that direction......

I am taking medication     :)     (ya'd never guessed, right?) that causes dizziness when ya squat down and get back up.  danged irratating.  when ya're looking for pigs ya have to get down to there level....it was making me dizzy so I just start tripoding it.  working toward the shuffeling leaves on my knees and tab hand with the new rough sanded bow in the other.  shuffeling getting louder, then I hear teeth popping and  sloppy eating with lots of smacking.  I knew it was either pigs or  wingnut eating fried chicken.  5 more yds and I see black feet and legs.....rooting up the ground a smacking on roots of some kinds.  I pull in behind a small tree and a little yopon.  I am gonna wait him out.  In my mind he is gonna come around the front edge of the brush his behind and give me a prefect broad side.  I wait and he eats and eats and roots and eats......OK I getting tired of this how long do ya think an old mans heart can beat at this rate.

I remmember Curtis talking about pig squealing to attrack a pig.......OK I let her rip. SSQEEEEEEEEEALLLLL......oh wait.....he switches ends and come out the other end of the brush he was behind.  this is the narrow end...he is not 11 yds from me headon mono a mono.  He is plumb grown and got long chompers.  I got his full attention.  Ooooooo now my heart rate is up.  Wingnut and I just last night talked about frontal shots.  have to hit a 2 inch spot but....where... I come to half draw.  the motion PO's him.  He snaps his teeth twice and CHARGES.  I come to full draw quick, Me moving or sumpin makes him spin of his heels to my left.  his motion scared me and I double clutch the draw and the arrow falls off the bow (string walking you are not in contact with the arrow      :)           :)     )  he passes to my left and 10 or 15 yds back I here him stop.  Damn he is going down wind to find at what I am and the come back.....and kick my can!

I pick up my arrow and move 5 yds to my right behind at big oak.  I figure to try and keep the tree between us.  My hand is shaking now and I have a hard time getting the arrow nocked and watching him at the same time.  I can see his legs, he is squared off facing right at me.  I  get my arrow nocked and collect a little.  I see his legs spin the other way and off he goes.  I set down.

Dang, Rusty's using hog calls and wearing lipstick attractant? Why, I hear that's almost enough to get your "trad ol' timer's" license revoked. Before you know it he'll be tinkering with metal risers, oly limbs and various effective sighting/aiming systems!  :p

Always enjoy your posts Rusty...let's hear the rest of it.

I will give a view of the area.  stuff is real tight and not a place your gonna take a heavy riser with sights and stabs.

  http://sites.google.com/site/stringwalkerbowhunter/centervilletight

these thick tight fingers hold a lot of game.

JC - good to hear from ya.  I got a few story about a persimon tree.  good place to spend time during deer season if you can fight the possums and coons off  :)  A racoon desided he was going to take over my stand while the fruit was ripe.  It was a heck of a fight......but I left the stand to him  :)
