Hey guys.  I shot a deer last night, and when I hit him, he let out a groan.  I've never had one do this before.  He was quartering away.  Shot him behind the shoulder and angled in forward.  No exit hole.  Shot looked good.  But never heard a noise like that before.  Can't look for him until I get off of work. Anyone had one do this before?

hockey7

I've had two do this. It's almost like a death croak, let out for a couple seconds long. I've also had other deer run in at this sound.

Tom Leemans

Never heard a groan before. Sure it wasn't some kind of long grunt? I've heard that.

No, it was for sure a long groan.  He did it right when I shot him.  It's killing me to not be able to look for him right now.  I think I may be able to leave work early.  It's pretty cold here right now, so I am not too worried about the meat, but it's gonna be a tough tracking job with no exit hole.

Groan or no groan... Is this one of those huge  oh my gosh Illinois bucks ??

SouthMDShooter

id groan to if someone just put an arrow through my lungs

I have hit & heard deer make this sound. It is a Death groan, just like a bear would make.

jonsimoneau

Guys, I don't think he was a real monster, but a good one.  I did not have much time to look him over.  He came in hard and fast.
Mysticguido, I like your answer.  I am praying that he is down.

Smilingg

That deer is down and close by, I'd say. I hit one like that, heard the prolonged groan, and the buck dropped dead about 5 seconds later.

Good luck...

Shaun

I've heard it once when I shot one with a smoke pole. Almost like the death groan of a bear. One long low blaht. My dear was dead right there.

Gehrke145

I've had it happen a few times.  All deer were shot in the lungs and went down fast

A.S.

Good luck with your tracking job Jon. I really appreciated your words of encouragement the evening I shot my buck.

Friends call me Pac

My first deer this year made a groaning sound too.  Sounds like the same kind of hit too.  She was dead in less than 10 seconds.

I had never heard one make that kind of sound after being hit before either.

I had one of the does I killed this year do exactly that, but in her case the arrow was a few inches high and cut her spine completely in half (Landshark head from ladder stand), cut the artery beneath, and caught the top of one lung.

She went directly down, of course, and gave a single, long bawl/groan.  Seemed more like "HEY!, What was THAT!!" than anything else.  Then she went to "sleep."  I was surprised to hear the vocalization.

Hope your buck decided a "nap" is in order, too, and that your tracking job will be an easy one.

I've heart shot a few deer that let out a loud roaring type of noise when the arrow hit them.

Shot a doe throught the lungs and hit the opposite shoulder blade she groaned. She went down in 75 yards. Lets see some pics when you find him.

Jon,
I shot one a loooong time ago with wheels in the rear end, not by choice- blood tracking a buddies buck- needed to finish it off- 40 yards right through the you know what.  Anyway- that buck "groaned- but more of a bawl type sound"
It was something to hear- ran off about 50 yards bawling the whole way, til he fell over.  Not to make light of the situation- but it still brings up some good conversation when hanging with the boys.  Your shot was true- post some pics....

Guys, I'm getting nervous now.  My buddy was able to go out and start tracking a little while ago.  He said there was not much blood (which I kinda figured due to no exit hole) and that he lost the trail after 100 yards.  Sounds like I may be doing a lot of grid searching for this one.  I hate it when I don't get an exit hole.  I really think the shot was a good one though.  It's hard to miss when they are only 5 paces off of your tree!
