Stainless steel broadheads and a big sheep

This is my good friend Robert Wright and a sheep he killed in the Santa Cruz mountains two weeks ago.
 
The first shot sent a new expensive SS broadhead into the shoulder if this beast and resulted in a shattered broadhead.
What was left was the ferrule and a bit of the back section of the head. The rest was broken off; I don't have a pic and mentioning brands would be counterproductive as many heads could have a problem with bone.
But I am interested in some feed back on what other folks have experienced with stainless steel broad heads-these were fairly lightweight-they look like an old Pearson Deadhead-and maybe these are meant more for the wheelie bow market.

hello Bjorn, check out the 300 xtreem at Bob Morrison. You could see some prelim test  www.peteward.com  under  the traditional section.
These heads are mfg. in California- not imported and they have exstensive testing in design and mfg
process, crack one of these on bone and I will send you a pack of 3 nc.
There are many grades of stainless,design has a lot to do with strenght .

the montec and snuffer ss are, imo, some of the toughest out there.  you may crack the tip off, but if ya pyramid it like the pics terry green posted of his woodsmens, ya should have no problems.

I have shot 3 animals so far this season with the same SS Snuffer.  It is all sharpened up and ready for the next three...

tiur The 300Xtreme broadheads are made in Ontario, Canada. I have no doubt they are superb broadheads and will be trying them out on hogs next Spring.

All these that are mentioned are sorta "one piece" broadheads.  Sounds like one of the expensive "two-piece" heads to me since it sounds like the ferrule itself was alright.

Stainless steels are the same as other steels...they can be too soft or too brittle, it's in the heat-treatment.  I do know the NAP Hellrazors (basically a montec or SS snuffer) handled abuse from a 74# compound just fine last year.  Never got to put them in bone but I did put some in trees.

I'd say anyone who makes these "super" heads would want to know about their product failing like this.  The only reason people have to buy those really expensive heads is the promise that EXACTLY this won't happen.  I'd expect them to give a very interested ear to your buddy and some free heads to replace the broken one.

I use the Razorcap, 3 blade cut on contact, i have never had one fail in an animal, and i have put a few through hog sholders and ribs

The new heads from Alaska Bowhunting Supply are solid two-blades and have taken Cape Buffalo and Elephant so far.

And if it's one of those new $30+ heads I'd be sending it back and asking for a new one.

Mike, the Ram was taken on a private ranch.
Frankly, we are much more inclined to continue to hunt with Grizzlies, STOS, or Abowyer solid type heads, just to name a few.
Basically solid 2 blade welded vs the SS screw on 2 blade.

Holy SNIKEES, did you see the price on those heads from Alaska Bowhunting?  UMMM, I think mine work just fine when I put them in the ribs!

FYI - Tiur is the guy that makes them.

I have now used the 300xtreem on 6 hogs and a bear to date, with fantastic results on all and they were all taken with the same broadhead. If you like extreem FOC these are the last broadhead you'll ever need to buy. They will not break unless your shooting solid rock or steel.

Bjorn, I've shot through several animals including hogs and an elk using Magnus Stingers and have the utmost confidence in them. I do use a high, but not "extreem" FOC (250 grains up front) arrow weighing between 580 and 620 grains. Frankly, I can't think of a reason or situation that would make me switch.

He beachbo! Not suggesting anyone switch-or do anything else for that matter........I'm sure it is like anything else, there are good ones and bad ones, and teething pains even for the good ones.
This may well have been an exception too, which is why I didn't want to get into naming names.
None the less when a 30 dollar broadhead breaks doing something it was 'built to do' it is worth talking about.

Was your friend shooting a wheelie bow?  I too, have seen several highly touted broadheads (of the same popular make) literally blow up on contact with bone when shot from a compound. I don't think it is the stainless steel but the design that counts.

The BH is made in California.........And I thought I knew everything.... The design was between a couple of us, the main person is from Canada and he did all the work and made all the forms and the BH is his..... I just got to help in the design it. I've used it for 2 years now and there is nothing I know of that is any better, You will lose this head before you destroy, if you can retreive it everytime you should only need one.  $75 for 3 and the only 3 blade solid stainless steel BH out there.
