Shipping Bows Overseas?
« on: November 18, 2008, 03:23:00 PM »
Just wondering how its done with insurance? I have checked with my local PO and they say it cant be done with insurance once it leaves the USA, is there any truth to that? What about brokerage fees and such? Any info is greatly appreciated! Thanks

Jason,

For one piece bows, use UPS.  YOu can insure for whatever it's worth.  Now getting the money after they break it is tough.

For TD, send it USPS international priority.  You can insure and it gets there fast.

Thanks for the info Mike, but there's just something about shipping with UPS that scares the heck out of me!

If it's over 60" you have no choice.  USPS won't ship it overseas.

I shipped a 70" longbow to France last year in a PVC tube.Like said USPS has a max length of 60" for Interenational shipping. So I went with UPS but it did cost, shipping was $122.15 but he did recieve it in 5 days safe and sound. If it would be a T/D I would ship USPS Interenational Priority, usally around $35 to $45.

UPS may charge the recipent a fee, and there may be a customs charge.  With the USPS, there are different length restrictions, depending on what country you are shipping to.  For instance, if you are shipping to Australia the max length via USPS is 42" via Parcel Post and 46" Global Express.

UPS is MUCH more expensive, but is the only option I know of for a longer package.

You can insure with the Post Office up to $650.
If it's in your way, move it.

For Australia: Anything over AU$1000 attracts customs inspection fees of about AU$200. UPS contact us as soon as it has been processed in Sydney, and we pay these fees over the phone. Then the package is sent the rest of the way. So, we do pay a little extra, but it sure is worth it for a new bow that you've had your heart set on, and which you'll make great memories with.

Jason follow this link and you'll find the index of countries. Click on the code for any country you intend to ship to and you'll get the regulations/size limits for shipping to that country. It is a good idea to print out the numbers and to bring them to your PO until you get the folks there trained. many don't know the regs themselves. The size limits are restricted by the country you ship to, not the USPS.

I have found Fedex to be cheaper than UPS to Australia as well as some in Europe.

FedEx is cheaper, but doesn't deliver to the bush. Well, neither does UPS, but at least they arrange for a local courier to do the job, which is all included in their cost. FedEx will deliver it to your nearest capital city or major centre, to a friend's address or something, and then we have to arrange it from there.

If the bow is slightly longer than the allowed length put it in a wide box diagonaly, and pad it apropriately.

I have shipped to Oz and Denmark. Several European countries have restrictions on length, and all USPS clerks may not know this. it's expensive, and a PITA, but it can be done. I'd recommend FedEx.
