Got Drawn for KY Elk... Now What? HELP!!!
« on: November 22, 2008, 04:25:00 PM »
Back in spring when things were dull, I decided to spend my $10 for the KY Elk lottery... Low and behold come in from the Hunting Woods, get the mail and KDFWR sent me a letter...

Dear Elk hunter,

Congratulations!  You've been drawn for the 2008-09 Kentucky post-season antlerless elk hunt.

Knott Co. EMU

Uh... only problem is this Florida boy who is currently living in Georgia, has no clue bout hunting cow elk... And to make it even more of a wonder, most articles and info is for Fall rut hunting bulls...

But I actually have heard it sorta like shooting free range cattle...
Anybody care to enlighten me?

You must have gotten drawn in the 2nd draw Kentucky had this year.  i am sure someone will jump in to help.  i wasn't sure when they were going to have the second draw & i guess i didn't get drawn for that one either.  Good luck and can't wait to hear your results...

Slasher,
Like many others I didnt get drawn. However I live in an area fairly close to elk country. You can find lots of information on kentuckyhunting.net.Click on the discussion forums when the main page comes up and scroll down on the elk hunting section.Lots of information and people there that will be willing to help you out. One area farther east than me even has a group called the "Undertakers" that I believe help people that are successful in their hunt retrieve their elk each year.Hope this helps.

If it's anything like Michigan, as soon as you're drawn for a elk permit your phone will start ringing off the hook with call's from "elk guides", property owners in elk country. Somehow these people get the list of successfull applicants and the calls start. This was the case with my brother-inlaw when he drew a few years back

Ky. no longer publishes the name of successful draw applicants.
I do think that the late season cow hunt will be in specific areas due to complaints from some landowners over damage being caused by too many elk.I think that they are now estimating that there may be as many as 12,000 elk in Ky by next fall. They want to keep them confined to a 16 county area in the southeastern section of the state.

I sent you an email.  I have a friend from KY that has helped others get their elk in KY.  He has hunted elk with me many times here in Colo.  If you did not get my note, let me know.

Slasher- A good buddy of mine drew a cow tag last year and had no trouble at all finding a good area to hunt and filling his tag. According to him, private landowners are prone to be very helpful as the elk are seen as a destructive nuisance by many. Sounds like acolobowhunter has you fixed up. Good luck, I'm still waiting to get lucky.                           Grant

A little for medicinal purposes... Woodford, goes down easy... I will probably need it!!!

From my understanding that yes this is a hunt to control the "ELK PROBLEM" and a list of affected property owners came with the congrats... I do find that they are quite helpful, but they don't seem to think there is much sport in it... I guess that this after season hunt is new untested concept... And noone knows exactly what will work or not work... But evidently, it's going to be really different...

It seems as I understand, I may have a problem getting close to the large winter herd numbering up to 60 animals.hanging out in the middle of predominately open fields...

acolobowhunter- Got the messages and will send a "shout out" and see what I can find out...

I'll let you know, when I find out something...

After talking to the KY DFWR Biologists... I think that this is hunt will be more of a humane euthanazation. Evidently these elk are causing problems in their winter herds down around peoples houses and depleting the grazing pastures of their cattle. Generally, becoming a nuisance... so why not let folks hunt them? Hey seems good to me!!!

I was told to expect herds of 20-60 elk, that are sort of accustommed to people once the season is over and thus the reason for the hunt...  However, since in my home, we prefer God's own Organic free range meat to the typical grocery store variety.... Momma says, I have to go!!!

The only issue should be getting stickbow close with that many sets of eyes, AND then making a good shot in that cold of weather... Knowing me, no slam-dunk!!!
